I lied staring at the roof. "why cant you admit you like my brother?" sarah said in a serious tone. i had decided to say there because i didn't like being alone, part of me also hoped that rafe would be there although, he wasn't. "i dont." I knew it was an obvious lie. I had only known him a few weeks now and everytime i saw him i wished he was on top of me.

I felt so dirty having these unholy thoughts about rafe. I took everyone's warnings into consideration.

'he has sex with girls and never talks to them again.'

Maybe i should listen to everyone's warnings. Maybe this was just the effect he had on girls. Maybe thats all he was trying to do with me.

I still couldn't get him out of my head. No matter how many times i tried thinking about all his possible bad intentions.

I sighed.

"coming to toppers party?" sarah said pulling me back into reality.

"another party?" i laughed, "yall ever get tired"

It was true, I felt like i hadn't had just a day at home in a while. There happened to be some party or bonfire practically every night. I wasn't complaining though, i loved parties, although i hadn't been comfortable enough to go hard yet, maybe i could actually get drunk this time.

"Ill be there."

The music was deafening by the time I stepped into Topper's house. Bodies were pressed together in every corner, red solo cups in hand, and the air was thick with a mix of sweat, alcohol, and smoke. I wasn't sure why I'd even come-maybe to prove to myself that I didn't care if Rafe was here or not. Or maybe because, deep down, I wanted to see him.

Sarah had already disappeared into the crowd, leaving me to fend for myself. I grabbed a drink from the makeshift bar in the kitchen, nursing it as I wandered through the house.

"Didn't think you'd show," a familiar voice drawled from behind me.

I turned, and there he was-Rafe, leaning against the doorway like he owned the place. His hair was a little messy, his shirt unbuttoned just enough to reveal the faintest hint of his chest.

"Why's that?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

He shrugged, smirking. "You don't seem like the type to like this kind of scene."

"And what type do you think I am?"

Rafe's eyes scanned me, slow and deliberate, making my skin heat under his gaze. "The kind that doesn't belong here," he said finally, his voice low.

I scoffed, taking a sip of my drink. "You don't know me, Rafe."

"Don't I?" he countered, stepping closer.

The air between us felt heavy, charged with something I couldn't quite name.

"Hey, Alana!" a voice called out, breaking the tension.

I turned to see a guy I didn't recognize approaching, a cocky grin plastered on his face. He looked familiar-probably one of Topper's friends, but I couldn't place him.

"Dance with me?" he asked, stepping in a little too close.

"Um-"

"She's busy," Rafe cut in, his voice sharp.

The guy raised an eyebrow, glancing between us. "Didn't realize she was with you."

Rafe didn't answer. He just stared the guy down, his jaw tight.

"It's fine," I said quickly, not wanting to make a scene. "I can-"

"No," Rafe interrupted, his gaze locking on mine. "You're not interested."

The guy scoffed but backed off, muttering something under his breath as he disappeared into the crowd.

"What the hell was that?" I demanded, rounding on Rafe.

He looked at me, unbothered. "He was wasting your time."

"That's not your call to make," I snapped.

Rafe leaned in, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You think I'm just gonna stand there and watch some idiot try to get his hands on you?"

I swallowed hard, my heart pounding at the intensity in his voice.

"Why do you care?" I challenged, my voice quieter now.

Rafe's eyes darkened, his jaw clenching like he was holding something back. Ge sighed and didn't respond.

I opened my mouth to repeat my question, but before I could, he grabbed my wrist, pulling me through the crowd and out onto the back patio. The cool night air hit me like a slap, but it did nothing to calm the storm raging between us.

"You can't just-"

"Stop," he said, cutting me off. "Stop pretending like there's nothing between us."

His words hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.

"I'm not pretending," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Rafe stepped closer, his hands shifted from my wrist to my waist, his touch warm against my skin. "Then stop running from it."

I looked up at him, the anger in his eyes softened by something I couldn't name. His gaze dropped to my lips, and for a moment, I thought he was going to kiss me.

But instead, he let go of my waist, stepping back.

"You drive me insane, you know that?" he said, his voice rough.

"Right back at you," I shot back, though there was no heat in my voice.

I remembered what i was told, he just wanted sex, and i wasn't going to fall for it. Two can play that game.

Rafe's lips twitched into a faint smirk, but it didn't reach his eyes.

And just like that, he was gone, leaving me alone under the stars with my heart pounding and my thoughts spiraling.
