CHAPTER 15: The Final Gauntlet

Stage 7 - Gauntlet Run

The Gauntlet Arena loomed ahead, an intimidating structure of towering walls and shadowed obstacles. The students gathered at its threshold, their eyes tracing the maze-like paths, high platforms, and imposing barriers that promised relentless challenges at every turn. Whispers filled the air as they speculated about what lay within, yet a shared tension settled over them—a collective understanding that this stage would demand every ounce of their skill and endurance.

Sensei Yoshi stepped forward, his usually calm demeanor tinged with a solemn edge. He raised his hand, silencing the murmurs. “This is the final stage—the Gauntlet Arena,” he began, his voice carrying the weight of the trials ahead. “Here, you will face a series of challenges that will not only test your physical prowess but also your strategic thinking, resilience, and, most importantly, your teamwork.”

He paused, his gaze sweeping over the students, locking onto each one as if grounding them with his focus. “Remember, your limits exist only in your mind. Face this challenge with courage. You may enter.”

The heavy gates of the Gauntlet Arena began to creak open, turning the anticipation to awe. Beyond the gates lay a sprawling, labyrinthine arena with towering walls, rotating platforms, narrow ledges, and ominous structures rising high above, casting long shadows across the ground. Every inch seemed designed to overwhelm and test them.

Kai exchanged a determined look with Esta and Michi, feeling his pulse quicken. Around him, others shifted with barely restrained energy, each mentally preparing to face what lay ahead.

One by one, the students crossed the threshold into the Gauntlet Arena, stepping into the heart of the challenge with steely resolve. Little did they know, more unexpected tests awaited them within these walls.

Kai’s team plunged into the Gauntlet, instantly met by a daunting series of obstacles. The ground trembled as spiked barriers shot up ahead of them, followed by jets of searing flames that erupted from hidden vents. Kai reacted instinctively, ice forming beneath his feet as he slid forward, extinguishing flames and creating a path for Esta and Michi.

Esta’s gaze sharpened, her divine eyes glowing faintly as she surveyed the shifting walls and lurking traps ahead. “There’s a trap to the left, about five metres. And…” She hesitated, catching sight of a faint shimmer in the air. “Pressure sensors on the floor. One wrong step, and—”

Without missing a beat, Michi formed a vortex beneath them, propelling the team just above the ground. They moved swiftly, hovering over the sensors, their combined abilities creating a seamless rhythm of movement, strategy, and quick reflexes.

Meanwhile, Takeshi’s team encountered a different set of challenges designed to test their strategic thinking and combat skills. The narrow corridor before them was littered with tripwires and sound-sensitive barriers. Takeshi paused, tilting his head, and emitted a sharp burst of sound that reverberated along the walls, triggering the traps prematurely.

Sora, sensing an opportunity, projected a bright flash of light down a side corridor, revealing a hidden passage. "This way!" he called out, leading the team forward.

Emiko spotted a series of simulated foes lying in wait. She closed her eyes, focusing her mind on the lead figure, forcing it to lower its weapon. Her face tightened in concentration as she guided it to turn on its comrades, buying their team valuable time to advance unscathed.

Elsewhere in the Gauntlet, other teams fought their own battles. Sakura’s focus was intense as she directed intricate origami creatures through tight spaces. Her creations disarmed traps ahead, folding themselves into delicate shapes that squeezed between narrow beams and lodged into gears to jam mechanisms.
