Ava couldn’t sleep that night. The ominous message, her father’s strained expression, and the cryptic warning echoed in her mind like a relentless storm. For the first time in her life, the fortress Victor Sinclair had built felt more like a fragile glass tower, ready to shatter under an invisible threat.
Restless, she slipped out of bed and padded down the dimly lit hallway of the Sinclair estate. The staff had retired for the night, and the house was eerily silent, the weight of her thoughts amplified by the stillness.
She made her way to her father’s study, the heavy oak doors slightly ajar. The soft glow of a desk lamp spilled into the hallway. Ava hesitated for a moment, then pushed the door open just enough to peek inside.
Victor was on the phone, his voice low and tense.
"She doesn’t know anything," he said sharply. "And I want to keep it that way. This isn’t her fight."
A pause.
"I don’t care what it takes. Just find him. Find Zane Wolfe."
The name sent a chill down Ava’s spine. She’d heard it before, whispered in conversations her father thought she wasn’t privy to. Zane Wolfe wasn’t just a rival—he was a ghost from Victor’s past, a name tied to betrayal, violence, and vengeance.
Her father ended the call, his hand gripping the edge of the desk as he exhaled slowly. For a moment, he looked older, more vulnerable than she had ever seen him. It was enough to make her retreat, slipping back into the shadows before he noticed her presence.
-----
The next morning, Ava sat in her office, pretending to focus on the stack of contracts in front of her. Her mind, however, was miles away. Zane Wolfe. The name lingered like a dark cloud, stirring something between fear and curiosity.
Who was he? And why did her father seem so desperate to protect her from him?
Her best friend Ellie Harper walked in, carrying two steaming cups of coffee. "You look like you haven’t slept," Ellie said, placing one cup on Ava’s desk.
Ava offered a faint smile. "Rough night. Thanks for this."
Ellie sat across from her, concern etched on her face. "Is everything okay? You’ve been acting... off lately."
Ava hesitated, then decided to share the bare minimum. "I got a threatening text yesterday. Dad’s on edge about it, but he won’t tell me anything. Just that it’s ‘complicated.’"
Ellie’s eyes widened. "A threat? Ava, that’s serious. Did you call the police?"
"My father wouldn’t hear of it," Ava said bitterly. "He thinks he can handle everything himself."
Ellie frowned. "That’s classic Victor. But maybe he’s right to be cautious. The Sinclairs have enemies, Ava. You know that."
Ava nodded, her mind wandering back to the name that haunted her thoughts. "Do you know anything about Zane Wolfe?" she asked suddenly.
Ellie’s expression darkened. "Zane Wolfe? He’s dangerous, Ava. I’ve heard whispers rumors, mostly about how ruthless he is. They say he doesn’t just destroy his enemies; he makes them regret ever crossing him."
Ava’s stomach churned. "Do you think he’s the one behind the text?"
Ellie hesitated. "It’s possible. If anyone has a grudge against your father, it’s Zane Wolfe. But why would he come after you?"
That was the question Ava couldn’t shake. If Zane wanted revenge on Victor, why target her?
-----
That evening, Ava sat in her car, parked outside an unassuming building in the heart of the city. She had pulled strings, used connections her father didn’t know she had, and found herself here.
The man she was meeting was a former associate of her father’s, someone who had fallen out of Victor’s favor years ago. But Ava knew he still had ties to the underworld.
The man slid into the passenger seat, his eyes darting nervously. "You’ve got guts showing up here, Miss Sinclair," he said, his voice low.
"I need information," Ava said, cutting straight to the point. "About Zane Wolfe."
The man’s expression hardened. "If I were you, I’d stay as far away from that name as possible."
"That’s not an option," Ava said firmly. "Tell me what you know."
The man sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Zane Wolfe is no ordinary rival. He’s a predator, and once he sets his sights on something or someone he doesn’t stop until he gets what he wants."
Ava’s heart pounded. "What does he want with my family?"
The man hesitated, then spoke in a hushed tone. "It’s not just your family he’s after. It’s you."
-----
As Ava drove back to the estate, her mind raced with the implications of what she had learned. Zane Wolfe wasn’t just a threat to her father’s empire; he was a threat to her.
And the worst part was, she didn’t know why.
But one thing was certain: she wouldn’t sit idly by while her life unraveled. If Zane Wolfe wanted to come for her, he’d find out that Ava Sinclair wasn’t as untouchable as he thought.
