Bzzz. Bzz-bz-bzzzzz
Nyx eyed the flickering lights, wondering if they'd go out again. They'd been having problems with the generators again, and their supply train from the east had gotten cut off and destroyed. Again.
At the thought, Nyx growled. She could do a far better job keeping the trains in line than Drift could. It didn't make sense why Sever trusted that idiot kid over her.
She stood up and sighed. Obviously Sever wasn't going to show up to hear her report, so she might as well leave.
As she walked to the door, she paused when she heard the door in the corner squeak open.
Sever walked in, and sat at his chair behind his desk heavily.
“Sir,” Nyx said, walking over. He looked up–he had dark circles under his eyes. His usual neat hair had a few hairs hanging in his face.
He took off his respirator, revealing his scarred lips and chins. He'd gotten attacked by a Frenzy when it all started up, seven years ago.
“Yes, Nyx?” he said, lighting up a cigar. “What's the report?”
“The salvage team got as much as they could from the train wreckage, but…” she sighed. “Almost all the parts for thr generators got stolen before we got there.”
Sever growled. “We didn't need this now--the entire valley of Anthrax depends on those to protect us from the Frenzies.”
“Sir…if I may be so bold as to ask if I could be in charge of the supply run?”
He sighed and ran his fingers through his dark hair. “Drift is doing a good enough job. She–”
“She's the reason the entire train got derailed in the first place!” Nyx burst out angrily. “She never follows orders! We can't trust her!”
Sever gave her a silent, cold look. Nyx closed her mouth and glared back. She turned and started to leave his office. “She's going to be the end of all of us,” she hissed at him before she stormed out.
Sever sighed as Nyx slammed the door. He was a bit upset about his daughter's failure, but she could do better. It was just a supply run.
He heard  boots shifting on the wood by his door. “We're losing power in the generators–the ones that keep up the shields, Drift.” He turned in his chair and looked at his daughter.
She was wiry and thin like him, with white-blonde hair she had gotten from her mother. She was standing in the shadows, and he could feel her anger but he couldn't return it.
He sighed. “You have to do better than that,” he told her. She walked up to his desk and sat on the edge of it.
“I'm sorry,” she said in a low voice. “It won't happen again.”
“The people of Anthrax depends on me to keep their lives safe from the Frenzies. The CityScapers have our parts now, and unless we want a war with them over scraps of metal, we're going to have to put guards up top.” He looked in her eyes. “Guards that don't need to be there–they want to live as much as the rest of us.”
She nodded. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a syringe with the green fluids of Frenzy-dust in it. He handed it to her.
She flicked it before she slowly plunged the needle into the artery of his neck. He winced, but it was necessary--the attack with the Frenzy all those years ago left him susceptible to the virus. The CityScraper had found a chemical that could hold off the effects of the Frenzy-virus. It broke down the virus over time, but Sever hadn't seemed to recover from it. It was probably just another lie that they had made to keep their people dependent on them.
He sighed as she removed the syringe. “Nyx is getting parts from the CityScraper under-forge--she's going to need an escort.”
Drift groaned. “Seriously? Why can't she get one of Milder’s trolls to go with her. She's so annoying!”
He sighed internally before he spoke. “She's going to be busy transporting the metal back, leaving her vulnerable to another attack.”
Drift sighed. “Fine.” She got off his desk and walked out.
He flinched again at the sound of the door slamming.
