Even through her hesitation Anon wasted no time in collecting the things she would need for our travels, as well as the case. She muttered to herself as she worked, stuffing various items into what I could only presume was a waterproof bag. I could have sat there for hours just watching my favorite pink haired maniac work. She knew where everything in her chaos was, an admirable trait if I must say so myself.
"I'm done!" called the enthusiastic voice I have grown accustomed to over time. "You don't seem as hesitant as you were a few minutes ago"
"I'll get to see Brice and his family. I haven't seen the girls since they were born!"
I smiled at her excitement, she was right of course, she hasn't seen Brice and his wife, Avery since they gave birth to the twins. With that thought and Anon's excitement we left her apartment, and the smell that will haunt my dreams for months to come, behind. The fresh air helped clear my mind, and nose, of all the fowl toxins that previously invaded my fragile body. It felt amazing to have a stream of clear thoughts again.
We quite hastily made our way through the maze of streets and buildings, parting crowds of confused citizens and making heads and wires flicker in our direction. No one and nothing dared to stop us, the atmosphere seeming to sense our haste. The chase after all is no fun if the trail runs cold...
The gateway came to life the moment we neared it, its inviting warmth leading me into a false sense of security. Despite my dread, I took another chunk of Aquavail and ate it, Anon following suit. She seemed to enjoy the bitter-sweet taste, this freaked me out, but again Anon is the farthest thing from normal.
"This the part where we jump in?" Anon asked her excitement sickening. I simply nodded. This was met with Anon grabbing my hand and dragging me into the gateway.
For a second, I was free again, and then my fears, dread and the cold hit me all at once. I wonder why it's always on a Wednesday that I have to solve cases that involve cold water? Everyone who knows me calls it Bad Luck Wednesday.
At this moment I wanted nothing more than to go home and stay in bed, but I knew I had to solve this case, this murder, this crime. If I don't the consequences will keep me up for my whole life, which I personally hope is short.
"Whacha thinking about?"
"Nothing, don't worry." I tried to sound convincing, but I knew better than anyone how adept Anon was at picking up emotions. Before Anon could ask more questions, I stood up, dusted as much dirt off of myself as possible. This proved hard, considering I was dripping with nature's torture device. Fucken cold water.
"Um, Lary, I think we made a slight miscalculation underwater." She sounded panicked, and only when I looked up, did I realize just how much of a miscalculation we made.
"Shit." We entered the fey forest.
