I am sick and tired of reading something where there's a smart person, and the author tries to make them sound smart by making them spew percentages. Now let me ask you people something: have you ever, in your entire life, heard any one say something in percentages, other then in a case where it involves either math, or a random number generator? No! Becuase people, regardless of them being smart, simply don't talk like that; it's just an author trying to fake it.
Not only do authors make their characters talk like this, but they use it in every chance possible, which is just as unlikely. I'm guessing that for these people, a scientist taking a trip to McDonalds ends up sounding like this: "Hm, shall I get a coffee? That stays under my budget of only using .01% of my salary on breakfast. But if I get a coffee, there's a 85% chance that I'll make it to my car with out spilling-- no, make that 75%, the floors a little wet. If the 25% happens, then there is a 15% chance that 25% of the coffee will land on my hand, with an 85% chance of burning it. Then it would be a 10% chance it would heal in a day, and 85% chance it will heal in two days..."
Blah, blah, blah, then they just keep spewing percentages that, guess what! Aren't really calculatable! Think about it, you have a target with a red dot that fills up 25% of the target. Is your chance of hitting the target 25%? No! You have to take into account other things, such as the wind, your ability to throw a dart, the tragectory (Rayquaza, I can't spell, please forgive me), the distance from the target, natural phenomonons (still can't spell), meaning in the end, you have a number! It means nothing! Unless that calculation is 100% or 0%, it means nothing, because it it's not either of those, it could still happen or not happen. So if you've found a number, good for you. It doesn't mean your smart.
Another thing is that they tie IQ with these percentages, when they don't even realise what IQ is good or bad. Some authors will have their characters have an IQ or 160-ish, and they're doing this wacky percentage talk. Let me point two things out to you people: 1) I'm pretty sure that's the average IQ of an average adult, and 2) an IQ of 200 is considered a genius, which they say these people are. And have you people ever taken an IQ test? No where in there did the proctor ask me about percentages, only stuff like how do these two words relate and stuff.
So take some time and actually figure out what something is next time. Percentages and decimals don't make up intelligence, reasoning and problem solving skills do.
