Zero | HOW IT STARTED...
Prologue

Cold, alone, and abandoned. They were the emotions I felt on my eighth birthday.

The river in front of me reflected the endless tears and quivering lip my face presented — a reminder of how worthless and unloveable I really was to my parents. My small and narrow shoulders hunched, a heavy sigh escaping my slightly parted lips.

"You really shouldn't sit like that." A squeaky and childish voice spoke out, making me slightly jump and turn into the direction it echoed from. "My mum says slouching isn't good for your posture." A nerdy looking boy stated, sitting himself down beside me on the small wooden bench.

"What?" My croaky voice broke out in confusion, who was this strange boy and why was he speaking to me about my posture? He looked around my age, but his height made me believe he was much younger.

His large doe brown eyes sparkled at me, his lips parting and turning into a upwards grin. "I'm Lee Heeseung, and you are..?" He stated, extending his tiny hand out for me to shake — causing my brows to furry and for my eyes to divert between his and the hand reaching out to me.

"Park Kyungmi." I quietly replied, hesitantly shaking his hand and staring at him with a slightly concerned look. "Are you here by yourself?" I wondered, looking around the open field and along the river for any other adult or child.

Heeseung giggled geekishly and shook his head. "No way! My mum would freak if I came here alone, even though I only live around the corner - but I wasn't supposed to tell you that." He continuously rambled on, his voice quietening the more his sentence extends.

The atmosphere turned uncomfortable as we stared at one another awkwardly. "I'm only eight.." The boy huffed and wiped his sweaty palms in his trousers, "so, I'm too young to be out alone." He cleared up whilst slowly nodding his head.

My eyes subconsciously lightened and my heart began to pound faster, "I'm eight too!" I excitedly squealed as if it were Christmas. "It's my birthday today." I added with a wide smile.

Heeseung's eyes also widened at the new information. "Really?" He happily questioned, copying my expression and enthusiasm. "Uh- here." He mumbled while bending down and plucking a daisy up from the grass and turning to hand it to me.

"Birthdays are a big thing in my house, it's rude not to give presents." The Lee boy explained with a nervous subtle stutter.

I stared down at the singular flower. It was one flower. And had even been picked from the dirty, damp grass — yet it felt like so much more. It was my first and only present I had received this year. It was from the first 'friend' I had ever made. And it was from a boy, despite me thinking boys are gross.

"If I had met you sooner I would've gotten you something better, sorry." His high pitched voice shyly spoke, his hand reaching up to scratch the nape of his neck.

"Thank you for the flower." I quickly responded. Daisies were never my favourite flower and they definitely weren't my second, but now I feel as though I'd choose them over any of flower.

Heeseung cutely chuckled and looked around into the distance. "Do you wanna go for a ride on my bike? It's over there behind that big tree." He wondered, pointing over at a small blue bicycle.

I let out a sigh and once again slouched my shoulders. "I can't, I don't know how to ride a bike." I disappointedly commented — Heeseung jumping up off the bench and holding out his hand for me once again.

"I can teach you."
