A six-year-old girl approaches her crying mother. She senses something is wrong but doesn't know exactly what. They haven't eaten in three days, but the girl knows that's not why her mother is crying. The woman tries to hide her swollen, bloodshot eyes and nosebleed. There's still a chance for her daughter. She's heard rumors about people born after the outbreak having immunity. Her daughter's five—she could be one of them. She doesn't know a world without this disease. The woman tells herself that's enough to hold onto, even if she's only clinging to blind hope. The girl, unaware of her mother's inner turmoil, tugs at her mother's worn, once-expensive coat sleeve and asks:

"Mommy, are we sick?"
