Soyo's jaw tightened, but her gaze remained locked on Jolteon. The Pokémon's spiky yellow fur bristled, each strand vibrating with barely contained energy. A faint ozone scent, sharp and electric, filled the air, a tangible manifestation of the power coiled within the creature. She'd seen powerful Pokémon before, the explosive energy of battles in Pallet Town seared into her memory, but this was different. There was a controlled ferocity in Jolteon's stance, a quiet confidence that spoke volumes. This wasn't a battle she could win.

Rio chuckled, a low, amused rumble that vibrated through the air. A stray leaf, disturbed by the sound, drifted down from a nearby tree.

Rio: "Impressive, isn’t it?" *He gestured towards Jolteon with a casual flick of his wrist, the movement betraying none of the underlying power he clearly possessed.* "But I'm not here for a battle. Lighten up a little." *A playful glint, sharper than before, sparked in his eyes.*

Soyo's eyes narrowed, a flicker of suspicion replacing her initial apprehension. The amusement in Rio's voice felt… calculated.

Soyo: "Then what do you… want?" *Her voice was low, a hint of steel underlying the question.*

Rio's eyebrows rose slightly at her guarded tone. He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender, the playful glint softening into something more genuine.

Rio: "Whoa, whoa, there, electric shock.  You misunderstood. I just… find you familiar. I saw you last night outside the burned building, that’s all." *He paused, considering his words carefully.* "You’re the trainer who was with Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny, right?"

A beat of silence hung between them, broken only by the rustle of leaves in the nearby trees. Soyo nodded slowly, her expression unreadable.

Soyo: "Yes.  So?"

Rio chuckled, shaking his head.  A small smile played on his lips.

Rio: "Nothing, really. Just… confirming it."

Soyo’s lips pressed into a thin line.  She wasn’t entirely convinced.

Soyo: "Are we just going to chat and stand here all day?" *A hint of impatience edged her tone.*

Rio laughed, the sound light and carefree.

Rio: "Haha, you’re easily riled up. Sure, let’s head back to Viridian City." *He reached into his pocket, a faint glint of metal catching the sunlight. Then, he turned and began walking towards the city.*

Soyo hesitated for a moment, then followed, a mixture of wariness and curiosity churning within her.

Soyo: "I'm Soyo, Soyo Dusk by the way."

Rio: "Pleasure to meet you, Soyo..."

As they both went back to Viridian City. The conversation that followed was surprisingly pleasant. Rio despite his initial smugness, proved to be surprisingly insightful. He shared stories of his own Pokémon adventure, tales of thrilling battles and narrow escapes, punctuated by his fascination with striped Pokémon and electric-type Pokémon. He spoke of strategic advantages and disadvantages, Pokémon types, and the importance of understanding your opponent. He was very skilled, and Soyo found herself listening attentively, a deep respect growing within her.

The realization gave her a boost of confidence. His motivations, he revealed, went beyond a shared interest in Pokémon. Team Rocket's activity had escalated recently, and he worried about her safety. He wanted to offer his guidance and experience, to help her navigate the dangers ahead. To help avoid any potential risk in danger lurks in the shadows. A new companion, a new adventure and perhaps, an unexpected friend.
