Melissa's POV:
It was 8am and I was walking through the halls of some school. I couldn't find the front office to collect my schedule and you think the front office would be at the front of the school but it's not so I'm currently walking about like a headless chicken trying to find it. Suddenly someone approaches me and asks, "Are you new here? I've never seen you before." She smiles. She seems so sweet and genuine. "Yeah I just moved here. Would it be okay if you tell me where the front office is?" I ask nervously. "Of course, follow me," she says and then starts off down the hall. I follow her and then she starts to make conversation, "So where did you move from?" "I moved from the UK," I reply not going into much detail about it. "That's so cool. You know you really don't sound how I'd expect someone from the UK to. Like when I think about a UK accent I think like an English accent if you know what I mean. But that's just stereotypes so I could be wrong." "Yeah I'm not from England I'm from Northern Ireland it's a part of the UK but it's quite controversial if you know what I'm saying," I explain. "Oh, I understand now. By the way my name is Avery. What's yours?" she asks. "My name is Melissa," I respond.
We eventually arrive at the office and Avery says, "This is the office and if you talk to that lady there," she points at an elderly woman with glasses, "She can help you with what you need." "Okay, thank you so much for showing me where the office was. I would have never found it otherwise," I laugh slightly. "Yeah, this school is quite big."
I go over to the woman Avery pointed to and say, "Sorry to bother you Miss, but would you have my schedule. I'm new here." "Yes I do, Your name is Melissa Sturniolo. Correct?" I nod and smile. I almost said no there because the surname I went under at my foster home was Smith. She hands me my schedule and I head back over to Avery.
"Let's see if we have any classes together!" Avery exclaims happily. I show her my schedule. Her smile drops and she says, "Aww. We only have gym class together." After she says that she does a double take on my schedule. "Oh my god! All of your classes are AP classes. You must be really smart. The only AP class I'm in is art and you don't do that class," she tells me. This new school must have looked at my records to immediately place me in what I assume were the top set classes because Avery called me smart. "Oh, I didn't notice that," I reply. "To be honest I don't really know what an AP class is." "It's basically just the smart people class. In simple terms," she explains.
The bell goes and I check my schedule. I have to go to this thing called homeroom. I ask Avery what it is and she replies, "It's like your start of day class. Did you have that at your old school?" "Yeah, my school just called it form though"
I'm now sitting in homeroom with Avery sitting next to me. I'm really glad we have the same homeroom. Avery is talking to someone else right now so I zone out because I don't know how long this class is going to last. I start think about my arrival to the school and how welcoming Avery was. I was expecting to get bullied or something like that. I also think about how early this school starts compared to my old school. I suddenly feel my phone buzz as I get a text message. It's from Fern. Come to think of it I kind of forgot to tell her I was moving away. It seems shitty of me but I don't think she ever actually wanted to be my friend. She only ever hung out with me when she couldn't find her chavy 'popular' friends at school. I open the message.
