"So, have you booked a flight yet?" Eve approached me the next morning as I entered the office, her eyes shining with curiosity. Her enthusiasm gave me a sting.

I avoided her gaze and walked towards my desk. "No."

"Why not?" She dropped into Jeff's empty seat and looked at me questioningly.

"I've changed my mind..." The light on the computer came on as it booted up at its usual slow pace. "Maybe I'd better concentrate on my article about factory farming than chasing after an unsolved murder case."

Her smile slumped and she glared at me. "What, you can't do that, Joyce! I was already totally into it. And you have to beat that idiot Dixon."

I just kept quiet. Of course she was right about all this and I would love to do the research on the murder case. But was I prepared to sacrifice my relationship for it? No, I was definitely too much of a coward for that. Besides, Aaron had confirmed my doubts - was I really that good at solving this mystery?

"What are you pulling, Evs?" Jeff arrived with his bag tucked under his arm and a large cup of coffee, shooing her from his seat with a wave of his arm.

"Joyce has given up," Eve replied, slumping dramatically into the chair at the next table.

"Excuse me?" Indignant, Jeff turned to me, glaring at me. "Listen, I can understand your doubts, but no one else - and when I say that, I mean it - no one else could solve this murder case. Nobody but you." He sat down and looked me seriously in the eye. "So you have a moral duty to write the research on the murder, do you understand?"

"Jeff, it's not just about the success of the research." I sighed and sat back. "Aaron and I talked about it yesterday and-"

"And he talked you out of it?" Eve interrupted. "Really, Joyce, it would do you good to get away from that control freak."

Jeff nodded in agreement while I glared at Eve. "Really, that's not nice, Eve."

"But the truth," I replied sweetly and pointed in the direction of Nilson's office. "You go to Nilson now and tell him that you want to do your research on the murder case and that's why you have to travel to Vienna."

"Eve..."

"If you don't do this research, I swear to you, I'll terminate our friendship.

I had to smile. I could even imagine that with Eve, knowing her. Jeff also smiled amusedly and gave me an encouraging nod. "Do it, Joyce."

"I'll think about it, okay?" Rolling my eyes, I turned to my computer and ignored Jeff's scowl. He knew as well as I did that I wouldn't change my mind.
For the rest of the day, I tried not to think about the research. I should put an end to it. Aaron had already done it too, sending me a quick voicemail in between telling me that he would be late and that I shouldn't wait for him to eat. He also mentioned a short trip to a newly opened racetrack that he was planning to take me on the week after next. He completely ignored the fact that I found racing cars absolutely boring.
