The air was crisp as the leaves danced from the trees in a whirl of orange, yellow, and red. Lila Roberts wrapped her scarf tightly around her neck, savoring the feeling of the cool breeze against her face. Fall had always been her favorite season, the kind that filled her heart with a bittersweet kind of peace, like the calm before a storm. The little bookstore she owned in the heart of town was her sanctuary—quiet, familiar, and untouched by the world beyond the cobblestone streets. As the leaves began to change, so did the rhythm of her life. The end of summer always signaled the beginning of something new.Her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her out of her reverie. It was a message from Maggie, her best friend and self-proclaimed personal cheerleader.
"I know it's sweater weather, but you should get out of the bookstore sometime soon. There's a photography exhibit opening at the town hall tonight. You could use a distraction!"said Maggie.
Lila rolled her eyes but smiled as she tucked the phone back into her coat pocket. Maggie was right; Lila had been hiding in the comfort of her bookstore for far too long. Ever since her breakup with Thomas—her high school sweetheart—it felt like she had retreated into herself, taking solace in the quiet of her books and the steady hum of the shop.
She glanced up at the town square. The old clock tower in the center ticked on, as reliable as ever. It was funny, she thought, how life seemed to go on without her. She had been so focused on her heartache that the world around her had moved forward without a second thought.
With a sigh, Lila grabbed her coat from the hook by the door and stepped into the crisp autumn air. She walked toward the café, hoping the warmth would do something to lift her spirits.
The café was cozy, the scent of fresh coffee and cinnamon filling the air. Lila made her way to the counter, where Maggie stood, her ever-present smile lighting up the room. Maggie had been Lila's best friend since childhood, and unlike Lila, she thrived in social settings. The two of them had always been opposites in that way.
"You're actually out of the bookstore," Maggie teased as Lila approached the counter.
"I had to get some fresh air," Lila replied, though the truth was, she'd been avoiding the reality of what her life had become. The world seemed easier to navigate when it was just her and the books.
Maggie raised an eyebrow. "You know, the photography exhibit tonight sounds like the perfect opportunity for you to get out of your head. Ethan Hayes is showing his work. Remember him?"
Lila froze. Ethan Hayes. She hadn't thought about him in years. He'd been one of those guys from school who seemed too cool to notice her, with his wild, messy hair and carefree attitude. But he was also kind and real, a combination that always seemed out of reach.
"He's back in town?" Lila asked, surprised. She hadn't heard anything about Ethan's return, but then again, she hadn't been paying much attention to anything other than the pain in her own heart.
"Yep," Maggie said, handing Lila a coffee. "He moved back a few weeks ago. Said he missed the quiet of the town. And now he's got a gallery showing at the town hall tonight. I know you're not big on social events, but it might be a good way to ease back into the world."
Lila hesitated, fingers wrapped around the warm mug, feeling the heat seep into her skin. Maggie's words were tempting, but still, she wasn't sure she was ready. Could she really go back into the world of new beginnings when she was still haunted by her past?
