Sounds of crunching gravel under Liam's tires filled the silence as we drove away from the city. Once-bustling streets and flashing neon lights faded into the silent embrace of the countryside. Liam had said he has a surprise for me tonight, and knowing him, it will be something unforgettable.
He'd always been the spontaneous one in our relationship, the kind of person who could turn a mundane Tuesday into an adventure. But tonight, there was something different in his energy-a quiet determination mixed with nervous excitement.
"You're awfully quiet," I said, breaking the silence.
He glanced at me with a soft smile. "Just thinking."
"About what?" I asked.
"You'll see," he replied cryptically, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the steering wheel.
I rolled my eyes but didn't press further. Liam loved his surprises, and I'd learned over time that he wouldn't crack under questioning.
After almost an hour, he pulled off the road and parked at the edge of this open field. The space was extensive, stretching out in either direction under a canopy of stars that seemed brighter than I had ever seen. The moon hung low, shining a silvery glow over the grass.
"Wow," I whispered as I stepped out of the car.
"Pretty, isn't it?" he said, pulling out a blanket and thermos from the trunk.
"Pretty is an understatement," I replied, twirling in a slow circle to take it all in.
Liam spread the blanket on the ground and gestured for me to join him. The night air was cool, but not unpleasant, and the faint hum of crickets added a soothing backdrop to the stillness.
We lay side by side. I couldn't help but be amazed at how peacefully everything felt. Liam poured us each a cup of cocoa from the thermos, the steam curling up gently.
"You always know just how to make things perfect," I said, taking a sip.
He chuckled. "I try.
We sat there in silence for what felt like an eternity, both of us staring up at the stars, our hands entwined between us. I found myself tracing little patterns into the back of his hand with my thumb, just a habit I'd picked up over the months we'd been together.
"Do you ever wonder how many people are looking at these same stars right now?" Liam asked suddenly.
I swiveled my head to face him, his face appearing in the soft light of the moon. His eyes seemed far away, as if he were somewhere else entirely.
