"Not really a party until someone brings the surprise zombies." – Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Covenant
The zombie apocalypse needed zombies, right?
“I thought you said that this place was zombie-free,” Kyle sneered at Forest, his gun aimed toward the group of zombies that were advancing on us.
“I thought it was!” Forest exclaimed, sounding slightly put off. He honestly did think the place was safe, didn’t he?
“Doesn’t matter anymore,” I told them both. “Either way, we’re gonna have to shoot some zombies tonight.”
I could tell that these zombies were newer than the zombie that had attacked me earlier, and that sort of freaked me out even more. Weren’t newer zombies more rabid and vicious or did that rule only apply to Stephanie Meyer’s newborn vampires? I wasn’t sure, and I wasn’t about to take chances either.
Letting off a round of bullets, one of the zombies fell dead. It was just like the other one—so mutilated that I couldn’t even determine its gender. At this point, I figured shooting and then waiting to see if I had hit the heart wasn’t going to work. Might as well just shoot it a bunch of times and hope for the best.
“Pay attention,” Forest snapped at me. It appeared that he was in close proximity of me. “I’m not saving you ass again.”
From the corner of my eye, I saw a zombie about to attack Annie. I was about to shoot at it, but Forest was already on top of that. Instead, I shot the zombie creeping up behind Kyle. It didn’t fall over dead, and so I shot it a couple more times until it dropped to the ground.
“Thanks,” Kyle breathed out as soon as he realized that I saved his life.
I gave him a nod, not saying anything. Prepared to shoot more zombies, I spun around, looking for other undead creatures, but I didn’t see any.
“They gone?” I questioned nobody in particular.
Forest shrugged, letting off one last shot to the zombie on the ground, being sure that he was for sure dead. “Dunno. Hopefully.”
“It’s your fault that we were taken by surprise like that!” Kyle shouted at Forest. “If you had just checked the back stock room, then we would’ve known that there was a hoard of zombies just waiting to crash the party.”
What Kyle said was true. It was Forest’s fault that we were surprise attacked. If he had just checked the area properly like he said he did, then he would’ve came across the room where the zombies were feeding on a security guard.
From what Forest told us, they were sharing. I didn’t think that zombies were the sharing type when it came to their food, but I supposed that I didn’t know everything about them.
“Hey, don’t blame me. At least I checked the damn place,” Forest said, defending himself. Kyle started to say something else but Forest turned around to go see if Annie was doing alright.
Kyle walked over to me, pocketing his gun. “Think we’re gonna run out of bullets soon?”
I glanced down at my gun. “Definitely.”
Sighing, he asked, “Where do you think we’re gonna be able to get ahold of some more bullets? Can’t afford to be out of ammo when a group of the undead start to attack us.”
