𓆩ᥫ᭡𓆪 -- -͙- Yeonjun stood alone in the vast gray field, the emptiness stretching out endlessly around him. The cold air nipped at his skin, a stark contrast to the warmth he had felt just moments ago with Percy. His heart ached with the loss, the crushing reality that she was gone again, leaving him stranded in this strange, liminal space.
But then, through the silence, he heard it—a sound so familiar, so cherished, that it made his breath catch in his throat. It was the sound of a child's laughter, light and carefree, ringing out in the distance like a bell. Yeonjun's heart quickened, and he turned toward the direction of the sound, his feet moving before his mind could fully process what was happening.
"DJ? Myles?" he called out, his voice echoing in the empty field. The laughter continued, a chorus of joy that he would recognize anywhere. It was the laughter of his sons, his beautiful, rambunctious twin boys, and the sound filled him with a mix of hope and desperation. He had to find them, had to follow that laughter.
He broke into a run, his legs pumping as he chased the sound, the gray field around him beginning to blur and shift. The laughter grew louder, more distinct, and he could almost see them, his two boys, running ahead of him, just out of reach.
The gray field faded, giving way to a vibrant scene that materialized around him. Yeonjun found himself in a park, the familiar sight of green grass, tall trees, and the bright colors of a playground replacing the endless gray. The sky was a clear, crisp blue, and the air was filled with the sounds of children playing, birds chirping, and the rustling of leaves in the breeze.
He stopped running, his breath coming in short gasps as he took in the scene before him. There, on a bench near the playground, sat his past self, watching over DJ and Myles as they ran around, laughing and playing on the equipment. Yeonjun's heart swelled with emotion as he realized he was witnessing a memory—a moment from just two months ago, frozen in time.
He walked slowly toward the bench, his eyes fixed on his younger self, who seemed so at peace, so unaware of the tragedy that would soon upend his life. Yeonjun sat down beside his past self, feeling a strange sense of detachment as he watched the scene unfold, as if he were both a part of it and apart from it at the Yeonjune time.
Myles and DJ were playing tag, their laughter filling the air as they chased each other around the playground. Yeonjun marveled at how well he remembered every detail—the way DJ's hair stuck up in wild tufts, the way Myles's face lit up with mischief whenever he got the upper hand in their game. It was all so vivid, so real.
"Junnie," came a voice from behind him, and Yeonjun turned to see Percy walking toward the bench, her smile radiant in the sunlight. She looked so alive, so full of life, that it took his breath away. She approached the past version of him, her hand resting on his shoulder as she spoke. "They're going to wear themselves out before dinner at this rate."
Past Yeonjun laughed, a lighthearted sound that seemed almost foreign to the present version of him. "Let them," he replied, a grin spreading across his face. "They'll sleep like logs tonight."
Percy chuckled and sat down beside him, her eyes on the boys as they continued their game. "I'm just glad they're getting along for once. You know how they are—always at each other's throats."
"Yeah, but they're best friends deep down," Yeonjun said, his voice full of warmth. "They'd be lost without each other."
Present Yeonjun watched the exchange with a bittersweet smile, his heart aching with the memory of how simple and joyful those days had been. He wanted to reach out, to speak to her, to tell her how much he loved her, but he knew it wasn't possible. This was just a memory, a moment in time that he couldn't change or hold onto.
