~Mission~

“This place doesn’t look like it would be filled with demons,” you remarked, glancing around the mansion. It had pristine white exterior and brown roofing. The living room felt strangely cozy, adorned with antique décor and paintings. You stood with your hand on your hip, studying the room, when Obanai smacked you on the head.

You winced, glaring at him.

“Focus on the damn mission, brat. We’re not here to admire the decor,” he muttered.
You rolled your eyes but bit your tongue, not wanting to argue again.

This mission was supposed to be simple: investigate a series of disappearances linked to a demon in the area. You were sent with Obanai. The walk to the place was silent. Obanai simply ignored your presence. You felt like he disliked you, but then again, Obanai seemed to dislike everyone except Mitsuri.

As the two of you walked down the hallway, you suddenly froze. A faint sound reached your ears.

“What?” Obanai asked, sounding confused. He hadn’t sensed anything yet.

“Shh,” you hushed him, tilting your head to focus.

“What is it now?” he asked again, more irritated this time.

“Will you shut up? I’m trying to figure out where it’s coming from,” you snapped.

Before Obanai could retort he fell silent. He’d heard it too...a faint, shuffling noise, coming from the end of the hallway.

“Over there,” you whispered, pointing toward a closed room.

The two of you crept toward the door, your hands tightening around your respective blades. Inside, you found a large, dusty cupboard. It looked out of place amid the mansion's otherwise pristine decor.

“Suspicious…” Obanai muttered, his voice low. Kaburamaru hissed, slithering down to explore the room.

Gripping your sword tightly, you stepped forward. “There’s definitely something off about this.”

Obanai followed, his blade at the ready. You opened the cupboard carefully, preparing for an attack. Instead, the cupboard was… empty.

“Seriously? I was hoping to kill a demon,” you sighed, placing your Nichirin sword on a nearby table.

“This isn’t right,” Obanai said, his tone sharp. He scanned the room as Kaburamaru slithered around the room. “There’s something off about this cupboard.”

“Wait, there’s a piece of paper in here,” you said, stepping into the cupboard to pick it up.

“DON’T—” Obanai tried to stop you, but it was too late.

A sudden force shoved you both inside the cupboard. Obanai’s blade was knocked from his grasp, and the doors slammed shut behind you with a loud click.
