~Mugen train~

The train hissed as it rumbled along the tracks, the rhythmic clatter filling the compartment. The air was filled with the smell of iron and faint traces of coal smoke, making the atmosphere feel heavier.

"UMAI!" Rengoku suddenly exclaimed, his voice booming across the compartment as he took another bite of his food.

You flinched, nearly dropping your own meal. Even though you knew about this particular habit of his, it never failed to startle you. You shot him an exasperated look but couldn't stop yourself from smiling.

Just as you were settling in to eat, a commotion from the other side of the compartment caught your attention. You turned to see a few familiar faces making their way over-Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and the boar-headed guy.

The three approached, their expressions a mix of shock and curiosity.

"Rengoku-san! Y/N-san!" Tanjiro greeted with a respectful bow before introducing himself and his companions.

You chuckled softly at their animated reactions. The boar-headed one introduced himself as Inosuke, loudly proclaiming his intent to conquer the train, while Zenitsu fidgeted nervously behind him.

Tanjiro settled next to Rengoku, while Zenitsu and Inosuke plopped down beside you. You would've preferred to sit near Rengoku, but the chaos Inosuke brought to the seat next to you kept things lively.

"I'M GONNA RACE THIS THING!" Inosuke declared, pressing his face against the window. "LET'S SEE WHO'S FASTER!"

Zenitsu groaned, tugging at Inosuke's haori in a desperate attempt to get him to sit down. "Stop sticking your head out the window! We'll get in trouble!"

You sighed and reached over, pulling Inosuke back into his seat with surprising ease. "Inosuke-kun, sit down. You'll just cause problems for everyone."

Zenitsu gave you an overly enthusiastic thank-you, his eyes practically sparkling with hearts. Meanwhile, Inosuke muttered something about the train being a demon, making you roll your eyes. These kids were something else.
The lively chatter came to an abrupt halt when Rengoku spoke.

"I don't know when a demon might appear," he said calmly.

The entire compartment fell silent, the weight of his words sinking in. Then, Zenitsu broke the silence with a panicked yell.

"WHAT?! THERE ARE DEMONS HERE?!?!"

"So the demon isn't waiting for us somewhere-it's already on the train?!" he continued, his voice rising with each word.

You smacked him lightly on the head to stop him from drawing any more attention. "Zenitsu-kun, quiet down. You're disturbing the passengers."

He grumbled but sat down, finally letting Rengoku continue.

"There have been more than 40 disappearances on this train," Rengoku explained. His tone remained steady, but his words sent a chill down your spine.

"The Demon Slayer Corps sent multiple teams to investigate, but none of them returned."

"That's why I was sent here as a Hashira, and why Y/N is assisting me on this mission."
