~A vunerable moment~
Two weeks had passed since the mission incident, and you hadn’t spoken to Obanai much. You thought that he wouldn't want to train you since he left so abruptly that day. So you spent most of your time training with Sanemi instead, avoiding any situation where you might have to face him. Though Sanemi was tough and relentless during training, his attitude felt easier to handle compared to Obanai’s constant insults.
After a long day of sparring, your muscles ached, and you decided to visit a nearby waterfall to relax and soothe the tension in your body. The calming sound of the rushing water gave some much-needed peace.
But to your disappointment, someone was already there..Obanai.
You stopped in your tracks, debating whether to leave or stay. Before you could decide, your eyes caught sight of him removing the bandages from his face. You knew you should've left but you were curious to see his face under those bandages. It felt wrong but you couldn't help it. You always wondered why he wore that even though he already had such a pretty face and eyes.
As the last of the bandages fell away, your breath hitched. His face came into full view, and your heart clenched. There were scars—two jagged lines extending from the corners of his mouth, as if someone had cruelly cut it open.
It all made sense now.It made sense now, why he didn't eat in group settings, why he wore the badages and why he got so upset over it. The realization filled you with guilt, and you averted your gaze, ashamed of yourself for intruding on such a private moment.
You decided to leave, taking a cautious step back, but luck wasn’t on your side. Your foot caught on a root, and you fell with a loud thud.
Obanai’s head snapped toward the sound, his jaw clenching as his eyes narrowed.
“What the hell are you doing here, brat?” he growled, his voice low and menacing.
“I—I didn’t mean to—” you stammered, scrambling to stand.
“Were you spying on me?” He strode over to you, towering above as his glare bore into you.
“No! I wasn’t spying!” you said quickly, your voice trembling slightly. “I just–”
Before you could finish, Obanai slammed his hand against the tree behind you, caging you in. Kaburamaru hissed, slithering down his shoulder as if echoing his master’s displeasure.
“Listen here, you pathetic brat,” Obanai spat, his voice sharp with anger. “First, you don’t listen to my orders. Then you skip my training for weeks. And now you show up here, invading my privacy?”
You opened your mouth to protest, but he didn’t give you a chance.
“And I know exactly what’s going to happen next. You’ll go running to the other Hashira, telling them how hideous I am. Isn’t that right?”
His words stung, his anger palpable. But instead of reacting, you took a steadying breath.
“You done?” you asked calmly.
Obanai blinked, momentarily taken aback by your tone. Before he could respond, you reached out hesitantly and lightly brushed your fingers over his scars.
He flinched slightly but didn’t pull away.
“I don’t think you’re a monster,” you said softly, your voice steady but kind. You eyes filled with nothing but admiration for him.“Your scars… they don’t make you ugly.”
Obanai froze, his breath catching. No one had ever said anything like that to him. For a moment, he was too stunned to react, his mind racing as he tried to process your words.
Pulling his face away from your touch, he turned his back to you, flustered and confused. The way you looked at him with so much love..His heart was pounding, and he hated it. These feelings, these thoughts about you...he had been trying to bury them ever since the mission, but they wouldn’t go away.
You stepped forward cautiously. “Iguro-san… I’m sorry. I won’t tell anyone. I swear.”
“Just leave,” he muttered, his voice low and trembling with frustration.
“Wait, Iguro—”
“I said leave!” he snapped, his tone harsher this time. He still didn’t turn to look at you.
Your heart sank, guilt weighing heavily on your chest. “Okay,” you murmured, stepping back.
As you walked away, you glanced over your shoulder, catching one last look at him standing there, alone by the waterfall. You wished there was something more you could say, something to ease the pain he carried. But for now, you decided to give him the space he clearly needed.
