The Plug's Daughter
Chapter 4: Nail Shop Chronicles
1 week later...Me and Zori were posted up at Queen Vee's Nails, waiting on our turn, because apparently, Houston don't believe in appointments. I'm talking about we been sitting there so long, I could've re-done my own nails and started a side hustle.
"Girl, I know you lyin'!" Zori hollered, scrolling through her phone and shoving the screen in my face. "Look at Keisha on IG tryna flex like she ain't owe you money since last summer!"
I squinted at the screen, her blurry post popping up. It was Keisha, sitting on the hood of some old-school Cadillac in a Fashion Nova fit like she was somebody. "Girl, you know that Caddy belong to her uncle. And the only thing she flexin' is her mama's payday loan."
Zori cackled so loud everybody in the shop looked over. "Not her mama's payday loan!"
"Yup," I said, filing my nails with the free emery board they gave me at the front desk. "She still duckin' me after that party on Southmore. You think I forgot? No ma'am."
"You petty," Zori said, sipping her Big Red she'd snuck in her purse. "But you right, though. She owe you. I mean, you did cover her when her wig came loose in front of that dude from 3rd Ward."
I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms. "And do you think she said 'thank you' for that? Nah. But it's cool, though. 'Cause karma always circle back like the Metro bus."
Zori was about to respond when my phone buzzed on the armrest. I glanced down and groaned.
"Who that?" Zori asked, leaning in nosy like she wasn't already in my business.
"Keisha," I said, showing her the screen. The message read: "Yo, I need you to pull up. It's about that drop."
Zori raised an eyebrow and smirked. "A drop? She actin' like she got weight to move or somethin'."
"Girl, she probably just need somebody to pick her up from Fiesta again. You know she always on that goofy stuff," I said, sliding my phone back into my bag.
"You gon' go?" Zori asked, side-eyeing me while chewing on a piece of gum like she was solving a murder mystery.
I shrugged. "I might. But I'm not in the mood for her drama today. My daddy said I gotta stop letting people play with me, and I feel like he's right."
"Oh, so now you listenin' to yo daddy? Wasn't you just sayin' he be doin' too much last week?"
"That was last week. This week, he got a point," I said, standing up as one of the nail techs finally called my name. "Now, come on. Let's get these nails right before I gotta remind Keisha why I'm not the one."
Zori laughed and followed me to the station. "Girl, you so extra. But that's why we friends."
