The next morning, Alina's day began with an unsettling jolt. From the moment she opened her eyes, the tension in the air was palpable. She had overheard another heated argument between her parents, this one louder and more intense than usual. Their voices—her father’s deep, frustrated tones and her mother’s sharp retorts—had echoed through the house, making her feel like an intruder in her own home. Though arguments between them had become routine, each one left her feeling more unsettled than the last. The constant strain was taking its toll, and Alina found herself dreading the moments when she would face them in the same space. Skipping breakfast, she grabbed her bag and left for school early, her mood as dark as the stormy sky that loomed above. She needed to escape, even if it was just for a few hours. At school, the familiar sights and sounds of the bustling hallway did little to lift her spirits. She walked quickly, her thoughts clouded, until she rounded the corner to her locker and collided headfirst with someone. “Are you blind?!” Alina snapped, her voice cutting through the air, sharper than she intended. The frustration from the morning’s argument surged to the surface, and she was quick to lash out. “Excuse me?” Amir’s voice was filled with both shock and indignation as he stepped back, his hands raised in a gesture of defense. “I was trying to apologize!”

For a brief moment, they stood there, each one trying to get the last word in, until the exchange escalated. Alina’s words became more biting, Amir’s retorts more heated. The sound of their back-and-forth drew the attention of a small crowd that quickly formed around them. Whispers and laughter rippled through the group, only adding to the intensity of the moment. Alina could feel her anger growing, her chest tight with frustration. She had no intention of backing down, and Amir seemed equally determined to prove his point. It was a collision of egos, both trying to assert themselves, unaware of how much the drama was intensifying with every word. Just as Amir opened his mouth to retort, the vice principal’s stern voice cut through the tension, silencing the crowd in an instant. “You two, to my office. Now!” she commanded. Alina's stomach twisted in a mixture of dread and annoyance. This wasn’t how she had planned to start her day. As they both reluctantly followed the vice principal down the hall, the whispers of their classmates still echoed in her ears. But in the midst of it all, one thought nagged at her: why did everything feel like a fight these days? And more importantly, why did Amir always seem to be the one caught in her line of fire?
