You and Robert tried to catch some sleep in the pickup truck that you ran into, but it was just too cold. Daytime was cold enough, so why did night have to be even colder?
You groaned, as all your muscles were aching and tired. You set your backpacks into the back of the cab, where several other seats were.
"Damn, it's freezing in here. Does this car have a heater?" you asked Robert, who was rubbing his hands together and blowing on them. He sat in the driver's seat.
"Not sure. If we can turn this car on then yeah," Robert replied, using his cold hands to grab around the steering wheel to find any car keys.
"That's great," you started to use the limited light coming in from the windows to look at the center console to help with the search for the keys. You would be lucky if they were even in here.
You opened the glovebox and searched inside. While there were no keys, there were things that were very useful. You pulled out a paper map, which was falling apart, a couple of phone chargers, vehicle registration papers, and a small booklet with the truck's servicing record.
"Look at this stuff," you showed Robert.
"And look at this," Robert dangled the keys in front of you.
"Nice. Who gets the honors?" you asked him.
"You can do it," Robert said, tossing you the keys.
"Alright!" you got out of the truck and switched spots with Robert. You sat down in the driver's seat, using the dim moonlight to find the keyhole. You looked around the steering wheel and found it.
You pushed in the key and turned it twice. The electronic dash lit up, with various gauges lighting up.
The fuel gauge displayed that the gas tank was a quarter full, with the speedometer and engine heat obviously at zero, which was expected, since the engine was off.
"Well, everything's looking fine," you reported to Robert.
"Yeah, then start this bad boy up!" Robert exclaimed, rubbing his hands together in anticipation.
You pushed the key in further and turned it once more, and the engine sputtered.
"C'mon, don't be difficult," you complained, smacking the dashboard.
You turned it again, and it sputtered a few more times.
You smacked it again and turned the key.
This time, the engine purred to- no, roughly coughed to life. The sound of the engine alone would be enough to alert any life forms within 20 miles that you and Robert were here.
You shifted the car from parking to neutral, pressed down on the pedal, and the engine roared louder.
"Yeah that's loud," you said.
"Turn up the heat already," Robert said, leaning towards the center console. He turned on the lights, which were on the car roof. The small lights slightly illuminated the center console, which made it easier to see the different buttons.
"It's not going to be very warm until the engine heats up a bit," you told him.
"Heat is heat." He turned on the heater.
You sat there for a bit, lightly pressing on the accelerator occasionally. When the truck started to heat up a bit, to a more comfortable temperature, you shifted the car into drive. You drove around the piles of rubble, searching for a more hidden place.
"Trying to find a place to hide the car?" Robert asked you, looking around.
"Yeah," you replied.
You drove around the empty streets, headlights on dim, to reduce the chances of you and Robert getting spotted. It took a while, but eventually, you found a small, hidden underground parking garage in one of the collector roads which were diverging off the arterial main road.
