The library was quiet as always, the soft rustling of pages the only sound that broke the stillness. Fourth had gotten used to the peaceful routine of his job. Every day, just before closing time, a regular visitor would appear—a tall man with dark hair and striking eyes who always chose the most random book off the shelf and left without saying a word. It was a routine that Fourth had started to look forward to, even though he had never spoken to the man. He had become something of a mystery, someone who seemed to haunt the library with a quiet presence, never staying long but always coming back.
Night after night, Fourth watched the man come in, grab his book, and leave, his face unreadable. There was something magnetic about him, something that intrigued Fourth but left him too shy to make the first move.
One evening, just before closing time, Fourth found himself standing behind the counter, watching the man browse the shelves. Something about the atmosphere was different tonight—the soft lighting, the quiet hum of the cooling air, the stillness of the space. Fourth had already finished his closing duties, but for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to lock the doors just yet.
As he glanced toward the entrance, he saw the man walk into the aisle near the back. His heart skipped a beat as he realized tonight might be different. Maybe, just maybe, he'd finally get the courage to speak to him. And so, as the clock ticked past closing time, Fourth stayed behind, hiding in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to finally speak.
A soft chime from the door signaled someone's entrance, and Fourth's heart nearly leapt from his chest. He turned, expecting to see the familiar figure. There he was, as always, walking through the door with that same purposeful stride.
But tonight, Fourth wasn't going to let him slip away again. He waited, counting the minutes, until the man came back toward the front of the library, the random book in hand. He was just about to leave again, and this time, Fourth couldn't let him.
"Hey," Fourth called out softly, his voice shaking slightly. "You're leaving already?"
The man paused, turning slowly, and Fourth's breath caught in his throat. For the first time, their eyes met properly. The stranger's eyes were a deep shade of hazel, and when they locked onto Fourth's, it was as if everything else in the room faded away.
"I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was holding you up," the man said with a smile, his voice a low, warm tone. "It's just that I tend to come in at the last minute, you know?"
Fourth nodded quickly, feeling embarrassed but determined to make conversation this time. "I've noticed. You come in at the same time every night." His voice trailed off as he realized how creepy that might have sounded.
The man chuckled softly, a glint of humor in his eyes. "Guilty as charged. I guess I'm a creature of habit." He stepped closer, then added, "I'm Gemini, by the way."
"Fourth," he replied, offering a shy smile.
A silence lingered for a moment before Gemini tilted his head, a playful smile forming. "So, you've noticed me, huh?"
"Just a little," Fourth said, his nerves fading as the warmth of Gemini's presence took over. He swallowed and forced himself to say, "I actually... um... stayed behind to see if you'd show up tonight."
Gemini raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Oh? Did you now?" His gaze softened, as if seeing Fourth in a new light. "Why?"
"Because..." Fourth hesitated for a moment, unsure how to put it into words. "I was hoping to actually talk to you. I've been seeing you here every night for months, and I thought... maybe we could have a conversation."
Gemini studied him for a moment, a slight smile curling at the corner of his lips. "I didn't know I had such a dedicated observer." Then, with a grin, he added, "But I'm glad you did. I've noticed you too, you know. The library's... a little less quiet when you're here."
Fourth's heart skipped a beat, and he laughed nervously. "Well, I'm glad I'm not as invisible as I thought."
The connection between them was palpable, like a bridge forming between two souls who had silently been watching each other from afar for far too long. The air around them seemed to crackle with something unspoken as their eyes met again, and this time, neither of them looked away.
Gemini took a step closer, closing the small gap between them. "So, what happens now?"
Fourth took a deep breath, his heart racing. "Well, I don't know. But maybe... you could stay a little longer? Talk for a bit?"
Gemini's eyes softened, and with a small laugh, he nodded. "I'd like that."
They found a corner in the library to sit down, and for the first time, the space between them felt like it was meant to be filled. Conversations came easily, both of them sharing small details about their lives, their likes, and their quirks. Every now and then, their gazes would linger a little too long, and Fourth would feel that flutter in his chest again, that same feeling he had every time Gemini had walked through the door.
They talked for what felt like hours, the library around them fading into the background as they lost themselves in each other's company. It felt natural, effortless, like they had always known one another.
As the clock ticked, they were well into the next day without realizing how much time they has spent together. Realizing that they had to leave, they both stood up. Gemini hesitated, glancing at Fourth. "You know, I wasn't expecting to meet someone like you tonight. Or ever."
Fourth smiled, feeling a warmth spreading through him. "Same here."
Gemini's gaze softened, and in the quiet of the library, he leaned in just a little closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Would it be okay if I kissed you?"
Fourth's heart skipped a beat. He had spent so many nights imagining this moment, and now, it was finally happening. "Yeah," he said breathed softly, his voice shaky but filled with certainty.
Gemini closed the space between them, gently brushing his lips against Fourth's. The kiss was soft and slow, a perfect reflection of everything they had shared that night—timid, yet filled with the promise of something deeper.
When they broke apart, they both smiled, their hearts beating in sync. "I guess we're not strangers anymore," Gemini said with a grin.
"Yeah," Fourth shyly mumbled, his cheeks warm with the afterglow of their kiss.
From that night on, the library became more than just a quiet haven for books—it became a place where two people who had silently shared their worlds without speaking finally found each other. And as the days went by, the connection between them grew stronger, with each visit to the library leading to new memories, new moments, and the beginning of a love story neither of them could have predicted.
As Fourth locked up the library one evening, they stood outside, the cool night air swirling around them. Gemini turned to him with a grin. "So, are we doing this again tomorrow?"
Fourth smiled, his heart lighter than it had ever been. "Definitely."
And with that, they walked into the night together, side by side, their future ahead of them, filled with endless possibilities.
