Ann sat at her small desk, laptop open, as a stream of notifications filled her screen. It had been a week since she joined a popular dating app, and the flood of messages was both exhilarating and overwhelming. Each notification brought a mix of hope and anxiety-hope that it could be the one, and anxiety about whether she'd know how to respond.
Lisa, her ever-enthusiastic partner in crime, sat across from her, scrolling through profiles on her phone. "This one looks promising," Lisa said, tilting her screen to show Ann. "He's from California, loves traveling, and says he's looking for something serious."
Ann hesitated before clicking on the message. "What if he's just saying that to get my attention? You know how some guys are."
"That's why you have me!" Lisa grinned. "I'll help you weed out the bad ones."
The first few conversations were light and easy. Ann found herself laughing at corny jokes from an Australian backpacker, exchanging travel tips with a British expat, and even discussing her favorite books with a quiet, intellectual man from Sweden. Yet, there was always a moment when the conversation shifted into uncomfortable territory-questions that felt too forward or intentions that didn't align with hers.
One particular chat stood out for all the wrong reasons. A man named Marc, whose profile boasted of wealth and luxury, began asking Ann if she would visit him in his country-without so much as a proper introduction. "I can book your ticket tomorrow," he typed confidently.
Ann showed the messages to Lisa, who rolled her eyes. "Block him," she said. "You deserve someone who respects you, not someone who thinks they can buy your attention."
Despite the ups and downs, Ann remained optimistic. Late at night, she found herself scrolling through profiles, imagining what her life might look like if one of these men turned out to be her happily-ever-after. The thought of a new adventure kept her motivated, even when the search felt disheartening.
Then came her first real match-a man named James from Texas. His profile was unassuming: a picture of him hiking in the mountains, a short bio about his love for nature and cooking, and a line that read, "Looking for someone to explore life with."
Ann felt an immediate connection. Their messages were thoughtful and warm, quickly progressing to video calls. Lisa was thrilled. "See? I told you it would happen!" she said, squeezing Ann's hand. "He seems perfect."
A week later, James proposed meeting in person. "I'll be in your city for work," he said during one of their calls. "Let's grab dinner and see if this connection is as real as it feels."
Excitement and nerves consumed Ann in the days leading up to the meeting. She spent hours choosing the perfect outfit and rehearsing what she might say. Lisa, ever the supportive friend, insisted on tagging along for moral support, sitting at a nearby table to ensure everything went smoothly.
The evening started well. James was charming, polite, and easy to talk to. They laughed over shared stories and bonded over their love for food. Ann felt a spark she hadn't experienced before. But as the night progressed, James began to withdraw. His replies grew shorter, and his attention seemed elsewhere.
By the time the evening ended, Ann couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. James walked her to her car, thanked her for the evening, and said he'd text her soon. But days turned into weeks, and Ann never heard from him again.
Heartbroken but determined, Ann turned to Lisa for comfort. "Maybe I'm just not cut out for this," she said, wiping away tears.
Lisa wrapped her in a hug. "Don't say that. You'll find the right person. James wasn't it, but that doesn't mean your person isn't out there. Keep searching."
Ann took Lisa's words to heart, diving back into the dating app with renewed focus. She knew the journey wouldn't be easy, but she was ready to face the challenges head-on. This was only the beginning of her search, and she was determined to see it through.
