Barun and Kali arrived at Bua’s modest home, a small yet welcoming house nestled amidst vibrant bougainvillaea. The air was rich with the scent of marigolds, strung into delicate garlands around the doorway. Kali’s parents, Beena and Ramakant, had originally hoped to hold the Pagfera Rasam at their ancestral home in Devalgeer, where centuries-old traditions were honoured, but Barun’s demanding schedule had made Bua’s residence a more convenient choice.

As they approached the doorstep, Beena stood waiting with a warm smile, her eyes glistening with affection. In her hands, she held a silver thali adorned with a flickering diya, a small bowl of vermillion, and a few grains of rice. With a gentle touch, she applied a crimson tilak to Kali and Barun’s foreheads, the mark of blessing and protection. Kali, her heart brimming with emotion, knelt gracefully to touch her parents’ feet, a gesture of deep reverence. Barun, observing her actions, hesitated for a moment before following suit, his movements slightly awkward but sincere.

Naveen, Kali’s cousin, couldn’t contain his excitement. He enveloped Kali in a warm, familial embrace, his laughter echoing in the crisp air. When he turned to Barun, he extended his hand with an enthusiastic grip, his eyes shining with a mix of curiosity and approval. The weight of the moment settled over Barun, a blend of tradition, new beginnings, and the quiet hum of familial bonds.

"Kali, Naveen will take you to your room," Bua ji instructed, smiling. Naveen grabbed their luggage and led them down a narrow corridor.

For Barun, stepping into Bua's modest home was like entering another world. The small, dimly lit room with its peeling paint and creaky wooden floor was a far cry from the opulent surroundings he was accustomed to. His eyes roved over the sparse furnishings—the faded curtains, the simple wooden chairs, and the bed that seemed barely big enough for one person, let alone two. His brow furrowed in barely concealed distaste, and a hint of discomfort flickered across his face.

He leaned in close to Kali, his voice low and edged with impatience. “I’ll talk to Aunty and Uncle. You stay here—I’ll go back home,” he whispered, his eyes already glancing towards the door as though seeking an escape route.

Kali’s eyes widened in shock. For a moment, a silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken words. Then, for the first time since their wedding, she spoke with a quiet, firm resolve. Her dark eyes met his, unwavering. “What will Bua ji think of us if you leave now? It’s just one night. Stay, please.”

Her words, though softly spoken, carried an unexpected weight, filling the small room with a sense of gravity. There was a plea in her tone, but also a subtle strength that Barun had not noticed before. The flickering light of an old brass lamp cast dancing shadows on her face, highlighting the earnestness in her expression. For a moment, Barun said nothing, feeling the pull of tradition and responsibility wrap around him like an unseen tether.

Before Barun could form a response, the soft creak of the wooden door announced Bua Ji’s presence. She stood in the doorway, her frail figure framed by the golden light from the corridor. Her eyes, kind and perceptive, swept across the room and settled on Barun, lingering for a moment too long. A faint shadow of understanding crossed her face, and she hesitated, her fingers nervously adjusting the edge of her faded shawl.

“The room is small for you, isn’t it?” she asked gently, her voice carrying the weight of unspoken apologies. There was a quiet humility in her tone, a lifetime of hospitality woven into her words.

Barun forced a smile, though it barely reached his eyes. “No, it’s fine,” he replied, his voice strained but polite. His hands rested awkwardly at his sides, betraying his unease.
