Starr reclined on her bed, her hands behind her head as she stared at the ceiling. She couldn't sleep as her mind is filled with different thoughts.
Starr groaned and climbed down the bed. The digital clock on her table was showing six am in the morning. There was still enough time before she gets to go out.
She walked to the bathroom and tied her hair in a messy bun before grabbing her toothbrush brushed her teeth and took her bath.
She walked out of the bathroom with a towel tied on her chest and sat on her bed . She unplugged her phone and went to her message app. the message was still there so it isn't a dream after all. The results for the scholarship exams would be out today and they were five lucky students.
She quickly applied her body lotion and wore a faded blue jean and tank top, with a knitted sweater on it. She picked her worn converse shoes and tied the lace, before combing her hair and typing it in a tight bun.
Starr locked the door to her room and walked to the kitchen
"Good morning mum" She smiled hugging her mum from behind
"Morning sweetheart, where are you going to?" Her mum asked passing her a tray containing a plate of scrambled eggs, two slices of bread and butter and a cup of strawberry tea.
"The scholarship results will be out today, so I'm going to check " Starr replied and began to eat her food.
"Oh dear, I'm very sure you would be selected " Her mum giggled
"I'm anxious mum, it's just five names. what if I don't get the scholarship, my savings is barely enough to get me into college " Starr replied with a sad pout
"We will find a way even if you don't get the scholarship" Her mum smiled and kissed her forehead.
Start finished her breakfast and sling her bag on her shoulders, kissed her mum goodbye and walked to the bus stop.
Few minutes later the bus stopped in front of her old school and she rushed inside the old and rusty gate. A lot of students were already gathered around the notice board, she pushed her way through the crowd and stopped in front of the board, her eyes scanned the names and it stopped at the third name
Starr Winters, printed in bold letters. Her lips curled up in a smile and she walked out from the hall
"Hey Starr, congratulations " A girl said waving at her . Starr turned and saw a girl with blonde hair, petite frame, and grey eyes walking towards her
Her brows creased trying to remember where she had seen the girl.
"I'm Leah Anderson, we met at the scholarship exams, we were on the same seat" The girl said shyly
"Leah, I'm so sorry, how are you doing " Starr smiled and hugged her.
"I'm good, I got the scholarship too" She replied her eyes twinkling.
"That's good news " Starr grinned
"Let's go and have some ice cream to celebrate, bills on me " Leah said and Starr nodded.
"Are you happy?" Leah asked as they sat on the bench eating their ice cream.
"Yes of course, who wouldn't be happy to get admitted into Shine college, that's my dream since I was a child " Starr replied
"We are really lucky, now we have just one week to prepare before we resume for the first semester " Leah said
"Yeah, I would be staying in the dormitory for now"
"Me too, I really hope they make us roommates " Leah pouted and they laughed.
Starr returned home in the afternoon, her mum was already out to work, she worked as a housekeeper for one of the rich people in the other part of the town.
She opened her wardrobe and stared at the clothes, most of them were worn out and tattered.
"I need to do a little shopping " She murmured and pulled out her piggy bank from under the bed
"Are you in for a little shopping tomorrow?" She texted Leah
"Sure, I was thinking same" Leah replied
"Okay see you tomorrow, I'll send you my address, we can use my mum's car" she texted back.
"Alright " Leah replied and Starr smiled. Leah isn't bad to hang out with, even of they aren't friends, she was cool and Starr liked her already.
Shine college was one of the most prestigious school in Oakshore and had been Starr's dream college since she got into high school.
Starr lived with her mum in the dirty part of the town called the slums by the rich kids who were privileged to live in big houses and attend better schools.
She went to a local high school that lacked enough teachers and basic necessity for a school but she was hardworking and spent most of her time studying.
Shine college gave scholarship to five students each year, when she heard about it, she immediately applied for the scholarship and now she was among the lucky ones that were selected.
Her mum is the only person she knows since she was born, there were no pictures of her father or any thing to suggest he was once part of their lives, her mum never talked about him and when she tried to bring up the topic her mum always shut her up so she gave up and accepted the fact that she had no father figure in her life
