THIRTY SEVEN

The silence in the room was oppressive. After Diana's declaration, everything seemed to stand still, as though the world itself had paused to absorb the gravity of what had just been said. Victoria sat next to her mother, her hands still trembling as she processed the finality of the words. The weight of it all—her father's betrayal, the impending divorce—seemed unbearable.

Then, just as she thought the storm had calmed, a loud crash echoed from the direction of the sitting room. The sound of something heavy slamming against the floor followed by furious voices made Victoria's heart leap into her throat.

Diana stood up immediately, her expression unreadable. "What in the world is that noise?" she muttered under her breath.

Before Victoria could answer, the door to the sitting room burst open, and in stormed Elizabeth—her sharp heels clicking against the floor as she marched into the room with an expression that was nothing short of thunderous.

"Well," she began, turning to Charles and Camilla, who were both standing awkwardly in the middle of the room, "I never thought I'd have to watch my own son make a fool of himself publicly. But, here we are!" The Queen's voice was cold but laced with an edge of humor. "Honestly, Charles, if I had known you'd become so embarrassing, I'd have sent you off to military school instead of this godforsaken royal life."

Charles, visibly flustered, tried to speak, but the Queen wasn't having it. She turned on him sharply. "Oh, don't bother defending yourself, Charles. You've done enough damage already. I don't know if I should be ashamed or just impressed by your audacity!"

Camilla, ever the picture of composure, stood with her arms crossed, as though trying to distance herself from the situation. The Queen, not at all phased by her silence, continued to rip into both of them.

"And you!" she snapped, turning her icy gaze toward Camilla. "Did you think you could just waltz in here, prance around like some kind of prize, and I wouldn't notice? Well, you're mistaken. I might not be able to stop you, but I'll be damned if I won't let you know exactly what I think of you! I know why you're here and why you've done this, and let me tell you, over my dead body will you ever be standing in my shoes!"

Victoria's eyes widened in disbelief, and for the first time in a long while, she felt a flicker of amusement as the Queen berated the woman who had threatened to tear her family apart. But then, just as the words hung in the air, the Queen stopped mid-sentence. Her gaze shifted, softer now, and for a moment, she seemed to forget the argument entirely.

"Victoria!" Elizabeth's voice softened as she rushed toward her granddaughter, pulling her into a tight, comforting embrace. "My dear, my precious girl." Her voice broke for just a moment before she composed herself. "You're alright, aren't you?"

Victoria froze in shock, her mind racing. She was caught between her mother's declaration of divorce and the sight of her grandmother holding her so warmly, as if to shield her from the storm brewing just outside the walls of this very room.
