Origin of the pointy hat: There were three female mummies uncovered in the Chinese region of Subeshi who were know as the Witches of Subeshi. They were famous for wearing a large funnel shaped contraption of black felt. These funnel contraptions are what we now call pointy hats.
Origin of Witches flying on broomsticks: After straddling a greased up hallucinogenic broomstick, people felt like they were flying on the broomstick. This morphed into the thing about witches actually being able to fly on broomsticks.
