The next moments for Marlowe were a blur. One second she was staring into Annabeth's startling gray eyes, the next she was thrown to her knees, wincing when her skin scraped against the rocks below her.Marlowe pressed her palms on the ground, her hair cascading around her face and blocking her vision. Her breaths were ragged as she tried to process what was going on. She was prepared for this. She wanted this to happen.
Yet it was suddenly feeling so real and like an impossible task. Maybe she should have stayed with Percy and let Annabeth jump. It sounded like a horrible thing to say, but at least then she knew that Annabeth would survive.
You're doing this for the greater good. Stop Luke now to save Bianca and Zoë.
That was the goal, anyways.
"Stand up," a harsh voice sounded through the room, echoing off the walls and causing Marlowe to shudder.
Did she have to? Could she just say no and stay on her knees?
Just as she went to raise her head, a hand roughly wrapped around her bicep and lifted her to her feet. She gasped at the action, swatting at the person without realizing that it wasn't just Percy messing around with her, but actually someone who didn't care if she died or not.
Not even a moment later, the tip of a sword was pointed at her throat, but Marlowe only glowered at the blonde boy a few feet in front of her. "Luke," she said coldly, "I would say it's a pleasure, but I don't like you."
Luke's lips quirked upward, a small smirk taking over his features. Even if he wanted to appear to be in control, Marlowe could see his tense actions, the way he constantly looked around the room, waiting for someone to give him orders. His clothes were in ruins, and he had grease and grim all over his face. Not at all like when she last saw him on the Princess Andromeda.
"Good to see you too, Marlowe. Glad you could join us," he said, spreading his arms out and looking around. "Like the new place? A much better upgrade than a cruise ship, don't you think?"
Marlowe finally got the chance to look around. It was dark, but there was a small crack in the ceiling, which allowed the moon to provide little light. All around her, monsters of some sort, and even a few demigods she had recognized from camp, stood, their weapons out and ready to be used at any moment. Why they had them out, she had no idea. It's not like she was planning to fight her way out of this. It would be a suicide mission.
Just behind Luke, Marlowe saw Atlas on his knees, holding the weight of the sky. It was a mix of gray clouds that swirled in a heavy vortex, making a funnel cloud that almost touched the mountaintop. The Titan buckled, his teeth gritting together in pain. It almost made Marlowe feel bad for him, but then the thought of what she was going to have to do passed through her mind and she forgot all about her sorrow.
Marlowe focused her attention back on Luke. She shrugged, "Eh, at least the cruise ship had unlimited ice cream cones," she said casually.
Luke chuckled, but his eye twitched and Marlowe knew she was getting under his skin. She almost started to laugh at him, but remembered she had a weapon pointed at her throat, so she held it back.
