Jason: Adam, you’ve got this journeyman. Stick to your fundamentals, don’t take unnecessary risks, and outwork him. You’re the better boxer.

Adam: Bet

Jason: And you, Blue.....this guy, he’s no joke. You’re going to have to use your head as much as your fists. Keep your defense tight, and when you see the opening, you go for the kill. Got it?

Blue: Yeah, I'll remember it all for the week.

The fight was days away, but I was already there in my head. The lights, the crowd, the sound of gloves meeting flesh....it was all I could think about. This was it....Miami, America, the big stage.

I was ready to throw hands.

The next day arrived, and the energy was different, more intense. It was time for the press conference. The nerves were there, but not in the way that made you want to run.

This was the kind of nervous energy that made me want to fight. To prove something, like I'm that guy innit.

Adam and I were both undefeated, about to step into the ring in America, and this was the first time people would get to see us in person before the fight.

It was time to face the media, the fans, and, most importantly, our opps.

Adam’s opponent, Terence Jones, was the first to step up. He had the look of a seasoned journeyman: solid, experienced, and respectful. He wasn’t the type to stir up drama.

When he and Adam took their seats at the table, it was all business. Terence spoke first when asked a question.

Terence: Yeah, Adam’s a good young fighter. I’ve seen the tape, and I know he’s got skill. But I’ve been around the block a few times, and I’m here to give him a lesson in the ring. Nothing but respect, but it’s my time to win

Adam nodded, keeping his cool. That was his thing, always calm, never one to get rattled.

Adam: I appreciate the respect, Terence. You’ve had a long career, and I respect that. But come fight night, it’s my time. I’m here to win, no question about it.

It was classy, respectful, exactly what you’d expect from Adam. No trash talk, just confidence. After a few more questions and answers of respect, it was my turn.

My opponent was David Spence, a guy who was a completely different story. He was 37 years old, with a record that spoke for itself.....41 wins, 10 losses, 2 draws.

He sat on the other side of the tables, as the officials had a feeling that things would get a bit mad. He’d been in this game a long time, fought the best, and even won the WBO Intercontinental title at Light Heavyweight.

He had defended that belt five times before losing it, and now he was fighting me, a kid with only four professional fights to my name.

What great matchmaking!

I wasn’t an idiot though, I knew he probably thought I was just another up-and-comer, another fighter he could brush aside so that he can leap up the rankings. But that wasn’t going to happen.

David leaned forward into the mic, a smirk playing on his lips. He was asked about me, and laughed a bit.

David: What I think about Blue? Look at him, he don’t belong here. Four fights? [Turns to Blue] They really think you’re ready for me? You’re just a knockout artist. Once you hit someone who knows how to take a punch, you’ll fold like a deck of cards.

I didn’t flinch. I’d heard worse, seen worse. I kept my expression calm, respectful. There was no need to get riled up.

Blue: Aight, David, I respect your career yeah. I mean, you've done a lot, fought a lot of great opponents, and you've held titles. But come fight night, none of that matters. What matters is who wants it more, and I promise you, I’m coming to win.
