On the other side of the city, a girl was tied to a chair, her mouth gagged with a cloth. Desperate, muffled pleas for freedom echoed in the cold, dimly lit basement of the warehouse where she had been kept since yesterday.
Footsteps reverberated through the basement, and a voice boomed, "Zubaan bohot chalti hai teri. Aaj ke baad nahi chalegi." (Your tongue runs too much. After today, it won't.)
"Please, sir, aapne jaisa kaha maine kiya. Aap kyu mujhe yahan leke aaye?" (Please, sir, I did what you asked. Why did you bring me here?) the girl sobbed, her voice trembling with fear.
"Kyu leke aaya? Tujhe nahi pata kyu leke aaya?" (Why did I bring you? You don't know why?) the man asked, his voice cold.
The girl shook her head frantically, signaling she had no idea.
"Divya, maine tujhe kya karne ke liye kaha tha?" (Divya, what did I tell you to do?) he asked while slowly pulling out a sharp knife from his pocket, the metallic sound sending chills down her spine.
"Aapne kaha tha ki Tara ko ulta sidha bolke use aapse shaadi karne ke liye main majboor kar du." (You told me to manipulate Tara, say bad things about her, and make her feel compelled to marry you), Divya stuttered, her voice shaking.
"Main tujhe bura bhala bolne ko bola tha, toh tu meri Tara ko manhus bolegi?" (I told you to manipulate her, and you called my Tara cursed?) Dhruv roared in anger, his voice echoing through the room.
"Teri himmat kaise hui use manhus bolne ki? Teri himmat kaise hui uske character pe sawal uthane ki? Maine tujhe kaha tha use bass itna bolna sabke saamne ki vo besahara ho gayi hai, usey kisi ke saath ki zarurat hai!" (How dare you call her cursed? How dare you question her character? I only told you to say in front of everyone that she was vulnerable, that she needed someone by her side!) Dhruv's fury burned as he dragged the blade across Divya's cheek.
She winced as the sharp edge sliced through her skin, blood trickling down her face.
"Tera aaj aakhri din hai, Divya, iss dharti pe. Tere aashiq ke paas pohncha dunga main tujhe." (Today is your last day on this earth, Divya. I'll send you to your lover soon enough.) Dhruv's tone was sickeningly sweet, as though he were sending her off on a pleasant journey.
Just as he raised his hand to stab her, his phone rang. His gaze flickered to the caller ID, and with a sigh, he gestured to his guard to silence Divya.
"Haan, chuhiya, bol." (Yes, little mouse, speak.) Dhruv answered casually.
"Ji?" Tara's voice came through the phone, sounding confused.
Dhruv stiffened at the sound of her voice but quickly regained his composure. "Tara?" he asked softly.
"Ji, vo... aap kab tak ghar aaoge?" (Yes, I was just wondering when you'll be home?) Tara's voice was gentle, unaware of the darkness on the other end of the line.
A smile crept onto Dhruv's face as he replied, "Main raaste mein hi hoon, Tara ji. Aapko kuch chahiye tha?" (I'm on my way, Tara. Did you need something?)
"Ji, nahi, vo shaam hone wali hai. Maa ji ne kaha tha ki aapse puch lu aap dinner karoge ya nahi ghar pe." (No, it's just that evening is approaching, and mother-in-law asked me to check if you'll be home for dinner.) Tara said.
"Ji, main aa hi raha hoon. Saath mein hi dinner karenge." (Yes, I'm coming. We'll have dinner together.) Dhruv's smile widened, his voice softening.
"Ji, thik hai." (Alright.) Tara replied before ending the call.
Dhruv slipped his phone back into his pocket, glancing at the whimpering Divya with a smirk. "Qismat achhi hai teri, Divya. Bach gayi tu Tara ki wajah se. Kal India se bahar chali jaana. Agar mujhe tu kabhi nazar aayi, toh tere liye achha nahi hoga." (You're lucky today, Divya, because of Tara. Leave the country by tomorrow. If I ever see you again, it won't end well for you.)
Trembling in fear, Divya nodded quickly, grateful that her life had been spared, at least for now.
Without sparing her another glance, Dhruv turned and walked out of the basement, a whistle escaping his lips as he left, a twisted joy in his steps.
Dhruv reached home and found Tara and Piya busy in the kitchen. With a loud, dramatic voice, he exclaimed, "Ohho! Dhanya bhaag humare jo aise chamatkaar zinda rehte hi dekhne ko mil gaye!" (Oh my, we are truly blessed to witness such a miracle while still alive!)
Both Piya and Tara turned to look at him, puzzled by his theatrics. His mother, who was seated in the living room watching her TV show, also looked at him in confusion and asked, "Kya ho gaya? Kyu chilla raha hai?" (What happened? Why are you shouting?)
"Chamatkaar dekh liya, Maa!" (I've witnessed a miracle, Maa!) Dhruv said dramatically, walking over to his mother.
"Matlab?" (What do you mean?) his mother asked, still confused.
"Matlab, Piya aur kitchen mein! Chamatkaar hi toh hai yeh!" (I mean, Piya in the kitchen! That's the miracle!) Dhruv replied, sitting down beside his mother with exaggerated seriousness.
"Hatt pagal! Vo toh Tara aur Piya dono milke Maggie bana rahe hain." (Get out of here, you fool! Tara and Piya are just making Maggie together.) His mother chuckled and dismissed him, turning her attention back to her TV show.
Dhruv shook his head playfully, grinning at the scene unfolding in the kitchen.
