Chapter 30: The Prisoner of Misunderstanding

The carriage jolted along the uneven cobblestone streets, its wheels rattling in the cold silence of the human realm. Dani sat inside, his journal balanced on his knee, scribbling furiously about the events of the past days. Lili's near-death experience, Simon's bravery, and Kiran's cryptic wisdom demanded to be recorded. His father's leather-bound journal-a rare and thoughtful gift-now served as a record of how fragile the balance between witches and humans truly was.

He paused, staring at the words he had written: "Humans don't just fear magic-they loathe it. To them, we are monsters hiding behind masks of civility."

The carriage slowed unexpectedly, jarring Dani from his thoughts. He frowned and leaned toward the window, noticing the guards exchanging hushed glances.

The door swung open, revealing the guard captain's stern face. "Change of plans, sorcerer. You're not going to Eesome Manor."

Dani's eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about? Joy Eesome is expecting me."

The captain smirked. "Not anymore. You witches don't roam freely here. We're taking you to the holding cells until someone human comes to claim you."

Dani bristled, his magic simmering beneath his skin. "This is a mistake. Joy or Carter will clear this up-"

The guard captain interrupted with a sneer. "We'll see about that."

At Eesome Manor, tension hung thick in the air. Joy sat in the family's ornate sitting room, her hand entwined with Carter's. The crackling fireplace cast flickering shadows, but its warmth did little to ease the cold dread in the room.

Elena Eesome paced restlessly, her elegant gown swishing with each step. Her carefully curated exterior-a testament to the wealth and sophistication of the Eesome family-was beginning to crack under the weight of worry. Though she was not a witch herself, the fact that her children were made their family a target of fear and prejudice in the human realm.

"Do we have any news yet?" Elena demanded, her voice sharp with frustration.

"Mother, please," Joy said softly. "We'll hear something soon."

Elena stopped pacing, her expression hardening. "This is why I've always warned you about magic. It's not a gift-it's a curse. Look at the position it's put us in. If people knew what you were, they'd burn this house to the ground."

Joy stiffened, her jaw tightening. "Magic isn't the enemy here, Mother. Fear and ignorance are."

"Tell that to the humans outside these walls," Elena shot back. "Do you think they care about nuance? They see witches and think of warlocks who cursed their crops, stole their children, or set villages ablaze."

Carter squeezed Joy's hand, silently urging her to stay calm.

The butler entered quietly, followed by a guard who looked uncomfortable under Elena's piercing gaze.

"Apologies for the interruption," the guard began, his helmet tucked under his arm. "There's an issue with Dani."

Joy straightened. "What happened?"

The guard hesitated. "The escort diverted him to the holding cells. They're refusing to release him without a human coming to claim him."

Elena's face paled, her lips pressing into a thin line. "This is exactly what I was talking about."

Joy stood abruptly, her voice firm. "We have to go."

"Absolutely not!" Elena snapped. "This family's reputation-"
