Chapter 32: The Return to the Academy

The Academy gates loomed ahead, a beacon of magic and sanctuary after Joy and Dani's unusual journey to the human realm. The spires shimmered in the late afternoon sun, the wards surrounding the campus radiating a comforting hum. It felt surreal to be back after everything they had faced-especially Joy, who had left not for an assignment, but to meet her fiancé.

As their carriage rolled to a stop, familiar figures awaited them at the base of the grand staircase leading to the main hall. Head Councilwoman Ember stood tall, her fiery red braid glinting in the light, while Ravi stood beside her, his authoritative presence as steady as ever. Willard was nearby, waving enthusiastically the moment the carriage doors opened.

"Joy! Dani! You're back!" Willard called out, his excitement uncontained as he jogged toward them. His light green eyes sparkled as he grinned at Dani, then at Joy, who was the first to step out.

"Willard," Joy greeted, her voice warm but slightly weary. "It's good to see you again."

Willard barely hesitated before grabbing one of Joy's smaller bags. His servants quickly swooped in to handle the rest, but he made a point of carrying the bag himself-even if it was more for show than practicality.

"I heard about your... trip," he said hesitantly, glancing at her for a reaction. "I hope it wasn't too stressful."

Joy's smile faltered, her hand instinctively reaching for her collarbone, only to brush against bare skin. Her missing bird-shaped necklace weighed on her more than she cared to admit, a constant reminder of how unmoored she felt.

"It was... eventful," she said, avoiding specifics. "Let's not dwell on it."

"Of course, of course," Willard said quickly, switching topics. "Let's focus on getting you settled. The Academy feels brighter with you back."

Dani stepped out of the carriage next, his demeanor calm and collected as always. Willard turned to him, offering a friendly nod. "Dani! It's good to see you too. The Academy hasn't been the same without you."

"Thanks," Dani replied, his tone polite but distant. "Good to be back."

As Willard continued chatting with Joy, Ravi approached Dani, his expression unreadable. "A word, son," he said, his voice low.

Dani nodded, already expecting this. "Lead the way."

Head Councilwoman Ember gestured toward a quieter area near the gates. "We need to debrief you, Dani," she said, her tone firm. "What happened in the human realm is of great importance."

Ravi placed a hand on Dani's shoulder as they walked. Once they were out of earshot, Ravi leaned in and whispered, "Keep it simple. The less they know, the better. Critical details stay between us."

Dani gave a slight nod. "Understood."

While Dani followed Ember and Ravi into a private chamber, Willard eagerly escorted Joy toward the dormitories. His servants handled her heavier luggage, leaving him to carry only a single bag.

"You didn't have to do this," Joy said, glancing at the bag in his hands.

"Nonsense," Willard replied with a bright smile. "It's the least I can do. Besides, I wanted an excuse to walk with you."

Joy gave him a faint smile, though her thoughts drifted elsewhere. The human realm, her fiancé, and the lingering questions about her missing necklace gnawed at her. The charm had always been her anchor, a source of confidence. Without it, she felt incomplete.
