Dinner is a mix of conversations overlapping each other, stories being retold for the hundredth time, and the occasional burst of laughter. Aubrey sits across from me, quietly navigating the chaos. She's always been good at that—watching from the sidelines until she's ready to jump in.
My mom and Jasmine are deep in a discussion about some new book they're both reading, while Ethan and Ben debate the merits of my latest single, each claiming they have the better ear for music.
"You're awfully quiet," I say softly, catching Aubrey's gaze.
"Just taking it all in," she replies, resting her chin on her hand. "It's nice. Feels... real."
I nod, understanding exactly what she means.
The table falls into a comfortable silence as dessert is served—pumpkin pie, because tradition is tradition. Aubrey's eyes light up when she sees it, and for a moment, she looks like the girl I used to know, back when things were simpler.
When we knew we were friends and not someone we once knew.

Later, when the plates are cleared and everyone's retreated to various corners of the house, I find myself on the back porch. The air is crisp, the sky dotted with stars.
"So, a popstar now, huh?" A calm voice says, breaking the silence.
"Something like that." I turn to see Aubrey coming beside me as I lean against the railing, exhaling a breath that turns to mist. "Still getting used to it."
She nods, thoughtful. "Must be strange, balancing all of it."
"It is. But it's worth it, most days." I glance at her. "What about you? Still happy with acting?"
Aubrey shrugs. "Yeah. But still figuring out what comes next."
The quiet stretches between us, but it's not uncomfortable. It never has been, not with her.
"I'm glad you're here," I admit, the words slipping out before I can overthink them.
She looks at me, really looks at me, and there's that same honesty in her eyes from earlier. "Me too."
And for the first time in a long while, everything feels right.

A/n: I know this was a shorter chapter, but let me know if you prefer it like this! Also this is the first time I am writing anything basically, but do you have any wishes on what should happen in the course of this story?
Please let me know in the comments I hope you like it so far.
Ps: I want to publish every week at least twice a new chapter.
