We parked outside the school gates, I could see students rushing to get to their lessons. My whole body froze. I couldn’t care less about school, that was the last thing I was worried about. I started thinking through previous conversations my brother and I had had. Was there something I missed? Did he get into a really big argument with someone? So big that they decided to murder him?
My thoughts were interrupted by Louis opening the car door for me. I sighed.
“It’s really weird; coming back here together. This is where we first met.” He said as we walked into the office.
“And where I embarrassed myself in front of you.” I laughed at the memory.
We sat in the front entrance waiting for the teacher to arrive.
“BRIGIT!”
I looked up to see Niamh running over to me. She jumped on my lap and wrapped her arms around me. I squeezed her back, silent tears rolling down my cheeks, Louis wiped them away.
“Niamh, it’s so good to see you.” I weeped into her shoulder.
“I understand why you left home, Brigit. I know how you feel.” She empathised with me. She lived with her boyfriend because her parents kicked her out.
“If I can get school sorted out, I, er, might be moving. down to, er, London.” I said hesitantly.
“Is that what you really want?” She asked seriously.
“It is. I want to be with Louis.” I held his hand.
“Ha, you move fast don’t ya?” She winked at me. We all laughed.
“You could come and visit anytime you like Niamh.” Louis said to her.
“Thank you. You better take care of my cousin for me, or else.” She threatened, sending him a warning glare.
“Of course I will." He slung his arm over my shoulder and I snuggled into his chest.
We spoke for a few more minutes before the Head Teacher made her way towards us.
“Mr. Tomlinson. Brigit.” She greeted us formally, gesturing to her office.
We walked in silence behind her, I suddenly felt very nervous. She opened up the door and we took our seats at the South-End of the table.
“So children, what is it you want to discuss with me?” She questioned. I didn’t like how she called us ‘children’. It felt intimidating.
“It’s about Brigit’s school work. She has moved out of her parents’ house and would like to move down to London with me. But because it’s her GCSE year she doesn’t want to mess everything up. Could we come to some arrangement?” He explained to her.
“Ah, I see.” She sighed heavily, then looked at me. “We could send you all the revision sheets you will need. Then next year you can come back to sit your GCSE’s. Once you have done them you can go back to London. That’s the best offer I can give.” She said sternly. It was obvious she wasn’t up for negotiation.
“Ok, deal.” I agreed. Louis smiled down at me, clearly impressed by my independence.
“When are you moving?” She asked as we got up from the table.
Oh yeah. I forgot to ask Louis that myself.
“Thursday. That’s when we have to be back for tour rehearsals.” He replied.
Thursday. Today was Monday. So I only had a few days to collect my stuff and leave.
“Write down your address and I will send you the work sheets.” She handed him a piece of paper.
