Chapter 8 - The return of powers?

Sonic was running. And for the first time in his life, he was being chased by a hedgehog almost as fast as him. He ran all over the place, hoping to land on the presidential building. After a while, he realised that the other hedgehog was no longer chasing him. Pretty sure that the other man was setting a trap for him, he decided to continue his run on... the buildings. He would have a better view and perhaps his opponent would be in more difficulty.

Even if he's probably more used to these situations than I am...

He took as much momentum as he could and ran up the side of a building. In no time at all, he found himself at the top. He stopped and looked around down below... when someone jumped on him. They fell backwards and Sonic dropped the crystal... which fell off the building.

- NO!' he shouted.

He turned to face the Machiavellian hedgehog.

The other forcibly picked him up and punched him in the head as he let go. Sonic fell to his knees, the taste of blood in his mouth. The other ran down the building. Sonic went to the edge and did a spin dash charge. The other was so focused on the crystal that he took the full force of the attack. He was thrown but, despite the power of the attack, he hadn't let go of the crystal. Sonic then had an idea. He moved towards the other as if to retrieve the crystal while the latter got to his feet. He held out his hand towards the crystal, hoping that it would be attracted to him as it had been in the warehouse. And it worked. The crystal flew out of the villain's hands and landed violently in Sonic's. It then flew back into the buildings. He then went back to the buildings. He jumped from building to building. Finally, he saw the Golden Ninja facing three villains. Sonic ran over there, snatching him out of the battle and dragging him back to the building he was on two seconds ago.

- Sonic!' shouted the Ninja, surprised. But where...

He paused as he saw the crystal.

- But how...

- No time,' Sonic cut him off. The clever boy who stole the crystal is following me.

- OK, so listen to me,' began the Ninja. You go to the antenna and try to do something to get the powers back there. I'll hold it back.

- Okay, but...

- Go!!!

So he went for it. It was easy to spot the antenna, which was very large. He soon reached its foot.

- Right, crystal. Put the powers back into the antenna.

He stuck the crystal to the antenna, but nothing happened.

- Oh, I don't know how to do that!

- Maybe I can help.

He turned round and saw the hedgehog he'd seen in the world of villains, Maya.

- Oh, that would be nice, but I don't think there's anything you can do,' he replied. How did you get here so quickly?

- I got TP'd,' she said, as if that made sense.

- Er, TP?

- Teleport. Are you from another planet?

- You could say that. I didn't know about these worlds until a few days ago.

- Until what?

- That's right. I think I was too isolated on my island paradise. But I'm talking to a bad guy here.

- Yeah, but then, what are you?

- What am I what?

- Are you a superhero or what?

- Well, you could say that. Anyway, I'm not taking your side.

- All right, Sonic, give me back the crystal. No, actually, I'll take it by force. It's more fun.

- Oooooh, I've never hit a girl before!

Why am I standing there talking to her when I should be chopping her up or kicking her out?

- You're stupid,' she said.

- I usually hit a robot. Or Eggman. Or Shadow. But I don't want to hit you. But if you insist... you're going to taste my spin dash!

He then sat her down. He did a spin dash, knocked her down and they fought. She was pretty strong.

I'd have beaten her already if the crystal wasn't in the way!

After a while, after a number of blows from both sides, Sonic got the upper hand and tackled Maya to the ground. Confident, he dropped the crystal beside him.

- You leave or you die,' threatened Sonic.

He rolled onto his side and grimaced as Maya struggled to her feet. Both were injured. Sonic, for his part, had his wounds from the glass he'd broken bleeding a little more and other blows here and there.

- Mmmh, it looks like you're too strong for me,' replied the hedgehog. Goodbye, superhero.

She disappeared. Sonic quickly picked up the crystal again and sighed.

Hopefully she won't tell everyone I'm here...

- Okay, crystal, we don't really have much time. And I really want to find my friends. They probably think I drowned. So, please, cooperate.

Suddenly, the Silver Ninja appeared beside him, and Sonic gasped.

- Well, you got the crystal, bravo,' he said.

- You didn't think I could do it, did you? retorted the hedgehog.

The Ninja looked him up and down.

- You're full of little blue flashes. Including your eyes.

- My eyes?

- Yeah, they've even turned blue. And a bit bright.

- Oh, yeah, I think it's the crystal that's doing that to my powers. I'm linked to it, I think. And it's attracted to me too. It's love at first sight, apparently.

He moved a little closer to Sonic.

- I think I know why your powers didn't disappear when the antenna was deactivated. Your powers don't come from the antenna, they're natural. Natural like the antenna.

Sonic cocked his head to one side.

- And? he asked.

- So, you can transfer the powers from the crystal to the antenna with your body.

- Oh, right, I'd be a living electrical cable. But it won't take away my powers or hurt me or worse...

- I don't think so.

- Oh, very reassuring answer. You don't know, actually.

- Sonic, it's the only way.

- Mmmh, okay...

- Put one hand on the crystal and the other on the antenna.

Sonic handed the crystal to the Ninja, put his hand on it and prepared to put the other on the antenna.

Go on, this is your moment.

He placed his hand on the antenna and closed his eyes. He felt the energy of the powers surge through his body and into the antenna. It felt like his whole body was burning from the inside out. He groaned.

- You're almost there!

Yes, he could feel it. He was almost there. With only a few seconds left, he screamed from the pain and the effort, then felt himself being thrown, was again dazzled by a light blue light, and everything went black.
