The bedroom was alight with a dozen flickering candles, held in place by bronze holders. A complex pattern twisted up the wall to create a beautiful twisting design. A blue material draped over the tall frames of the bed, hanging down again in a neat design. In the centre of the room Dave strode backwards and forwards, in deep thought. He wore only his red trousers, leaving his upper body on show.
'I can't kill a witch' he thought to himself, 'I've never seen a witch, how am I suppose to find one and kill it ... Or even survive.'
A knock was heard from the door and the knight jumped, before turning.
'You may enter' he said simple, knowing it was only a servant for his sister or the heir would have spoken first. The door clicked open and a young girl entered. She was no older then 19, her hair was cut short and was jet black. She kept her head lowered while placing some objects on the side,
'From my master' her voice wavered as she bowed.
'The heir?'
'Yes sir, he told me to bring these for your comfort.'
The knight stepped forward, looking over the different things the maid had brought in, a silver bowl of warm water and a few towels. Dave turned back to the maid, he noticed she was watching the floor and her body was shaking slightly. The male knew he didn't need to ask her anything, she was just a maid, but being a knight he'd spoken to a lot of people below him, including people of his own family.
'Are you alright?' he questioned, the girl noticeably flinched.
'Y-yes sir' she still didn't make eye contact and continued to shake.
'What is your name?'
'Jane' the girl replied quickly, Dave could see she wasn't comfortable but he didn't know why.
'It's a very pretty name'
'Thank you' she bowed again.
'It's strange for a young girl as yourself to be working in the castle as a simple maid, are you Rose's lady in waiting?'
'No sir ... If I may, I have a list of chores I must do before the moon is high'
'Oh, my apologise for keeping you, then you are excused'
Dave watched as the girl quickly nodded and hurried out of the room.
The quarters fell silent again,
'What a curious girl' Dave stated quietly, before sighing and walking over to the large window. He looked over the town. The buildings all glowed in the moonlight, disguising the filth of its crooked streets in a thin coat of light, making it seem almost magical. In the distance a owl called into the night, causing a shiver to run down the knights back. If that wasn't omen enough nothing was, he'd be facing a witch before he left this town, it's just whether he'd survive or not was the question.
The peaceful night of sleep was cut short by a commotion around the kingdom. Dave woke with a start at a violent knocking on his door, he called back while slipping into clothes. The young maid entered again, a terrified look on her face.
'Its the witch' she cried, 'You're wanted in the thrown room.' Dave grabbed the sword which was leaning against the wall and ran down through the castle.
'There you are' Rose ran to her brother, 'Dave you have to stop her, she's on a rampage' the look of fear in her eyes emphasised just how terrible the witch could be.
'Where is she!?'
'Down at the gallows,'
Dave turned to look at John, he was walking down the room, his face struck with anger, the knight had never seen his friend with such a dark expression. He came face to face with the angered blue eyes,
'You need to go down there and kill it.'
Dave didn't question the orders, he was more afraid of John's actions if he didn't act. He hurried out of the thrown room after bowing to the heir to the thrown.
The dark sky seemed to crackle with power as the knight sped down the road on his steed. The jolting of green lightning could be seen ahead.
The knights heart was in his throat, he was terrified, but his helmet covered up the look of fear. The air ran thin as the witch came into sight, the horse reared, kicking its feet out into the air. The knight jumped off in time to avoid being flung off the animal. He unsheathed his sword as the horse galloped away. The sound of horse hooves caught the witches attention, she released the flames she was controlling which went from an sickly green back to a burning orange. The figure turned to face the knight, Dave couldn't make out its face, a sheet of darkness enclosed it and the green lightning twisted around the witch like a snake. Dave steadied himself, trying to stop himself shaking, he rose his sword in the air ready to attack. The crackling cut out and the witch vanished, leaving behind a ring of burning gallows and buildings.
