I Know, Baby I Got You

Work had been long; 12 hours shifts at the hospital were not a fun time. While I enjoyed what I did, I really did but the long hours and dying patients just wasn't helping my mental state. I lost an ICU patient today; they had had a heart attack and had a failed stent. It's nice to know that they are no longer in pain but it's still hard to look at the family and see the start of the grieving process. I clocked out of the hospital and proceeded to walk to my car. The night was chilly, and the sky was a dark blue, zero stars in sight per parking lot lighting. Once I sit in my car my whole-body collapses and I break down in tears. Why must this happen to me? I have no idea how long I was crying. I only snapped out of my trance once my phone rang, it was Melanie. I answered:

*Call Starts*

Melanie: Hey babe, where are you? Dinner has been done for like 15 minutes.

(Y/N): I-I'm s-still at w-work. I-I'll be h-home s-soon.

Melanie: Is everything okay? Are you crying? Baby, what happened today?

(Y/N): I l-lost a p-patient again t-today. I'll t-talk m-more when I-I'm home.

Melanie: Okay baby, get home safe.

*Call Ends*

I turned the key to my car; the engine was coming alive. I lift my hand and wipe my face off my tears. This was going to be a long drive. As I back out of my spot and get onto the main road, I see that there is one star, shining brightly at me. Was that my patient? My headlights illuminate the road as I drive to Melanie and I's apartment complex. The radio was off, the silence becoming deafening.

Once I arrived home, I walked up the stairs to the second floor and put my key into the lock. As I hope the door Melanie is right there ready to give me the biggest hug ever. Her arms are open, and she looks cozy in her pajamas. Face free of make-up and hair up in a ponytail. "Come here, come here." She says proceeding to frail her arms around and I cave. The door was still open as I lazily put my arms around her body. She squeezed my body, giving the most loving hug she could muster. "Let's get some food in you but first you need to change."

I turned to close the door and then walked to our shared bedroom. I stripped from my work scrubs and lazily found an old, oversized T-shirt from Melanie's first tour. I didn't bother with pants as I made my way back to our living room. Melanie had been prepping plates for dinner while I changed. I sat on the couch and stared at my food. Spaghetti wasn't my favorite dish but when it was good, it was the best damn thing. I started to push my food around my plate with the fork. "Am I going to have to feed you again this time?" Melanie was happy to do it, like in times past when I was too mentally week to eat. "No, I can do it."

I moved my fork to my mouth and took my first bite. Red sauce and thick pasta enter my mouth, and the flavor satisfies my taste buds. My arms feel weak as try to take my next bite. I just can't tonight. "Melanie..." I can't bring myself to ask for help. I don't deserve to eat when there are people dying. People that need me to take care of them. "Of course, baby, I got you." Melanie moved closer to me as she took the fork from my hand. Not wanting to overwhelm me she gathers a small bite for me to take. She holds her hand out as she moves the fork from the plate to my mouth. I willingly open my mouth for her to place the food in my mouth. She allows me to chew and swallow before moving to the next bite. This continues until my plate is empty. "Baby you need to eat, I'm going to go lay in bed."

I slowly walked back to our bedroom. I made my way to bed, and I pushed back our silk bed sheets. I lay in bed but couldn't bring myself to close my eyes. The only thing I would see was my patent and what I could have done differently. Not long after I laid down Melanie came and laid down with me. "Go to sleep baby. Tomorrow is a new day." She reached over to stroke my hair as she laid close to me and wrapped her other arm around my body. I closed my eyes and just thought about my lovely girlfriend and everything she has done for me. I wouldn't think of anyone else that would feed their significate other because of a difficult day. "Thank you, Melanie. I really needed this tonight." "I know you did baby."
