The time had finally come. The skies over Camp Half-Blood were dark and foreboding, swirling with unnatural clouds that mirrored the chaos about to unfold. The ship loomed in the distance, and I stood on its deck, my heart a tangled mess of emotions. This wasn't just a battle—it was the culmination of everything Luke and I had worked toward, everything that had cost us more than I ever imagined.
I adjusted the grip on my sword, the weight of it both familiar and foreign in my hand. My other hand flexed, a faint pink glow sparking from my fingertips. Aphrodite's gifts—manipulative, dangerous, beautiful—had become my second weapon. I wasn't just a fighter. I was magic incarnate.
The landing was swift and brutal. Giants and snake women charged first, followed by our forces. I leapt into the fray, the hem of my white tunic fluttering as my boots hit the sandy ground of Camp Half-Blood. It was surreal being back here after everything, but there was no time for reflection. The campers were ready for us, their defenses fierce and determined.
The clash of metal filled the air as I parried a sword aimed at my chest. A boy—no older than fourteen—stood before me, his face full of fear and resolve. I hesitated for a split second, just long enough for him to strike again.
"Sorry, kid," I muttered, sidestepping and knocking his weapon aside with a flick of my wrist. A burst of magic shot from my hand, wrapping around him like a shimmering whip, and I sent him flying into a nearby tree. He wasn't hurt—just stunned—but guilt still gnawed at me.
The battlefield was chaos. Familiar faces were everywhere. Some I'd trained with, laughed with, fought alongside. Now, they were my enemies.
I spun, blocking an attack from an Athena kid whose name escaped me. His strikes were precise, calculated, but I was faster. I used a burst of magic to blind him temporarily, then knocked his sword from his hand.
"Stay down," I warned, my voice cold, before turning to face my next opponent.
It was a girl this time, and she came at me with fiery determination. Her blade clashed with mine, sparks flying as we fought. She wasn't as skilled as me, but her ferocity made up for it.
"Isla!" she shouted, her voice breaking with emotion. "What are you doing? You were one of us!"
Her words stung, but I didn't let them show. I pushed her back with a surge of magic, sending her sprawling.
"I made my choice," I said flatly, though the words felt hollow.
Another wave of campers charged, and I lost myself in the rhythm of the fight. My sword sang as it clashed against theirs, and magic swirled around me, creating a deadly dance that left my enemies disarmed and dazed.
But then I saw her—Katie Gardner, a daughter of Demeter I used to garden with in quieter days. She hesitated when she saw me, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Isla...?"
I couldn't do it. I couldn't attack her. Instead, I turned away, letting one of the giants handle her. My chest tightened as I moved on, the weight of my choices pressing heavier with each step.
Luke—no, Kronos—was somewhere ahead, leading the charge toward the Big House. I followed in his wake, fighting my way through the chaos. Each step forward felt like a betrayal, but I couldn't stop now.
The battle raged on, and I fought with a precision and power I hadn't known I possessed. Magic and steel became one as I deflected attacks and incapacitated my opponents. I was unstoppable.
But with every camper I struck down, with every face I recognized, a piece of me crumbled. This wasn't what I wanted. This wasn't what Luke would've wanted.
