"Everything is going to be okay," I console the beautiful girl sobbing in my arms.
After a few moments, her breathing calms and she slowly looks up at me, her eyes shimmering with fresh tears.
"What's going to happen to us?" Her voice is barely a whisper.
"I don't know, but Anna I need you to tell me who the beast is. What did he look like? Tell me all you know," I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I don't know where he came from. Hell, maybe. -he had burning red eyes, he was tall. I don't think it was alive. He's... A skeleton, and has horns..." She whimpers, "and my... My parents, they were on the floor, dead, but then their bodies began to shake -they turned right into him!" She began to sob again.
"We can't be the only ones left," I assure her. "Come on," I grab her hand and begin helping her up.
"Where are we going, it's not safe!" She whisper shouts.
"We have to find others, survival is in numbers, and staying here like sitting ducks isn't going to insure our safety, now come on. I'll protect you, I promise," I pull her all the way up and lead her through the school and out the doors.
"How is it the middle of the day and none are out? You would think if they're spawning through the dead, and they're clearly killing a mass of people, I would have seen see one?" I voice my curiosity as we hurry to my car.
"Where are we going?" Anna finally speaks up, once inside my car.
"Your house. We have to find some clues," turning the key in the ignition my car lets out a thundering roar. Being the only person driving, I peel out of the parking lot, tires screeching. I've always wanted to do that.
"Be careful, we don't want to alarm them that we're here." Anna snaps.
Rolling my eyes, I continue down the road a little more sane than before.
Driving through town you would never be able to guess that you neighbor may be a skeleton demon on the hunt for blood. I guess you never really know who your neighbors are.
Pulling up the drive to Anna's house you can immediately tell that something is amiss. The large front living room window is painted with blood from the inside. I can't tell if the funny feeling in my stomach is because I know that's the blood of Anna's parents, or if it's a bad idea to go in there.
"I don't think this is a good idea," Anna whimpers. I feel bad for her, the guilt sitting in the bottom of my gut like boiling hot tar.
" I don't trust leaving you out here all alone, and going inside there just might help us survive," I reply almost empathetically. Almost.
Getting out of the car, I glance around our surroundings before helping Anna out of the car. I let her hold my hand as we approach the front door. Slowly turning the handle, my hands begin to feel clammy. Anna starts to squeeze my hand tightly in hers.
Creeping my head in, I see what a mess the beasts have made, but the coast is clear. Nodding to Anna, I step inside the house, and she follows suit, cowering closely behind.
"There's vomit all over the place," I plug my nose.
"It smells like stomach acid," Anna copies me and plugs her nose.
"look!" She points to the coffee table.
On the corner of the table, there was little holes, as if something had eaten through them. And then it hits me.
"There's no carcasses." I point out, a little harshly as a see Anna flinch.
"It's their vomit, their vomit is acidic and eats away at the skin. Their bodies weren't shaking, they were bubbling from the acid. But I still don't understand why their skeletons became a beast." I tell Anna.
I stare at the scene some more, trying to put two and two together. It just doesn't make sense.
A loud clatter echoes in the kitchen, causing us to jump and Anna presses into my side, tears beginning to form.
We freeze. Our ears straining to hear anything else. My heart begins to pound heavily in chest. Soon after we hear scrapping on the hard wood floors.
Soon I begin to realize...
We're not alone in here.
