Anna's POV
"Anna, East side!" Dawn shouts from the middle of the roof. I take off running and pull out my pistol, in less than a minute I've taken out three. But they're still coming. The door to the front of the school opens and Drako comes sprinting out, taking out the first Seikorae's his eyes land on.
"The school is being taken over," Drako calls over the walkies.
"We have to get out of here," Dawn replies.
Seikorae's are swarming the school like ants, coming out of seemingly no where. Reloading, I throw a grenade to the edge of the trees. Seikorae's begin coming onto the roof from inside the school, causing our attention to drift.
Peter grabs a submachine gun and goes ham on the beasts, taking them down in an instant.
Drako made his way to the truck and pulls up the the edge of the school.
"Let's go," Dawn shouts at us.
"What about Chris?" I look at her incredulously.
"He's dying anyway," She snaps. Glaring, I turn on my heel, running for the door.
Out of no where Peter scoops me up, holding me back by my waist.
"We have to go," Peter's voice is hollow and grim.
"He was your best friend!" I scream.
"Let's go!" Dawn shouts impatiently as she begins firing once again.
"I know," Peter's grip on me is firm as I struggle to get out.
Gun shots fire from within the school and I know they've found him.
"No! Chris!" I scream out, the tears beginning to fall as Peter drags me to the edge of the building. I dig my nails into him, attempting to get out.
"We have to go," Peter looks at me.
I look at the door to the inside.
"I love you," I whisper even though I know Chris will never know. Peter helps me onto the rope and lowers me down into the truck. Once we're all down Peter and I take off for Chris's precious car. The only thing we'll have left of him.
Peter speeds away from the school, following behind Drako and Dawn. I watch the building in the background that holds Chris and know he's putting up the fight of his life.
Soon the school disappears into the horizon and I can' help but think back to what Chris told me.
"There's some sort of blessing here,
But you've gone and missed your cue,
So keep your eyes set on the horizon,
on the line where blue meets blue,
And I would bet that silver lining,
Well, I know I'd find you soon,"
My eyes drift out the window as pictures of his smile flood my thoughts, trying to drown out the images of him in his final stages.
After a few hours of driving, Drako pulls over. We pull up next to him.
"Where are we headed?" Dawn asks.
"California," I reply, my eyes never moving from the window.
"California it is," Peter nods.
Drako gives a curt nod back as he begins to drive again, and we follow in silence.
The long drive to California was uneventful. We stop occasionally. But nobody ever says anything.
Finally the drive nears an end as the smell of salt creeps in through our rolled down windows. We pull up to an old prison next to the beach. We pile out, Drako and Peter setting up our living arrangements and locking down the prison.
The fall breeze blows through my hair as I stare out at the line where blue meets blue. Pulling my cardigan tighter, and listen to the waves crash.
"Hey," Dawn comes to stand right next to me.
"Hey," I reply softly as I turn to look at her before looking back to the setting sun.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Dawn stares at the horizon as well.
A small chuckle escapes my lips.
"I don't know, they're pretty scattered," I fight a frown before continuing. "I'm scared."
"We all are. And that's okay," Dawn places her hand on my shoulder.
"I miss him," my eyes begin to tear up as I force the words out. "It's been a week and I'm still expecting to turn around and see him smiling as he grabs my hand to comfort me."
Dawn nods in understanding. My heart twists as I think about what he's left behind and what he took with him.
"What's wrong?" Dawn looks at me and I feel foolish for thinking she wouldn't notice. I hear shuffling behind us and Dawn turns to the two boys. Somehow I know she's glaring at them to stay at bay.
Sighing, I blink back the tears before locking my eyes on the silver lining.
"I'm pregnant."
