The weeks following prom brought a sense of clarity that Chan hadn't experienced before. The whispers around school had finally quieted, the tension with Jae had faded into memory, and even Hyejin had seemingly retreated into her corner of the social sphere. It was as if the universe had conspired to give Chan and Hyunjin the peace they deserved.
But the discoveries about Chan's past—and the truth about his creation—still lingered. They weren't burdens anymore, not in the way they had been before, but they were part of him. And for the first time, Chan was beginning to understand that embracing his origins didn't mean being defined by them.
It was a quiet evening at the Hwang house, and Hyunjin was sprawled out on the living room floor, flipping through an old photo album he had found in the attic earlier that day. Chan sat on the couch, tinkering with a small music box he had salvaged from one of the attic's forgotten boxes.
"Look at this," Hyunjin said, holding up a picture of himself as a child, dressed in an outrageously flashy outfit. "Fashion icon in the making, right?"
Chan glanced at the photo and smiled. "Undeniably. You've always had a flair for the dramatic."
Hyunjin grinned, tossing the album aside and propping himself up on his elbows to look at Chan. "And you've always been the calm to my chaos."
Chan's hands stilled on the music box, and he looked down at Hyunjin, his expression soft. "I like your chaos," he said quietly. "It makes everything brighter."
Hyunjin blinked, momentarily caught off guard by the sincerity in Chan's voice. Then he smiled, his gaze warm. "You know, superstar, you're pretty good at this whole boyfriend thing."
Chan tilted his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "I've had a good teacher."
Hyunjin laughed, shaking his head. "Stop. You're going to make me cry."
Chan chuckled softly, setting the music box aside. "I wouldn't mind. It'd suit you."
Hyunjin rolled his eyes, but his smile didn't fade. "You're lucky I love you."
Chan's heart stilled for a moment, the words settling over him like a warm blanket. It wasn't the first time Hyunjin had said it—there had been quiet moments before, whispered confessions in the dark—but somehow, it always felt new.
"I love you too," Chan said, his voice steady but filled with quiet emotion.
Later that evening, as they sat on the rooftop of the Hwang house, Hyunjin's father joined them unexpectedly, carrying a tray of tea. It was rare for Dr. Hwang to spend much time with them, but since the revelations about Chan's past, he had made more of an effort to connect.
"I thought you two might like something warm," he said, setting the tray down.
"Thanks, Dad," Hyunjin said, taking a cup. "You're being unusually generous tonight."
Dr. Hwang chuckled, sitting down on one of the deck chairs. "I suppose I've been reflecting a lot lately. About the past. About what it's brought us to now."
Chan looked at him curiously. "What do you mean?"
Dr. Hwang sipped his tea, his gaze distant. "When your father and I created Project Son, we were driven by grief and desperation. We wanted to create something extraordinary, but we didn't fully understand what we were doing. And yet, here you are—living proof that something beautiful can come out of loss."
Chan listened intently, his chest tightening. "Do you think he'd be proud? My father?"
Dr. Hwang turned to him, his expression softening. "I think he would be more than proud. He'd see what I see—a young man who's not just a creation, but a person. Someone who's made his own path, his own life."
Chan nodded slowly, his heart swelling with a mixture of gratitude and determination. "Thank you. That means a lot."
Dr. Hwang smiled, standing and placing a hand on Chan's shoulder. "You've brought something wonderful to our lives, Chan. Don't ever forget that."
As he walked back inside, Hyunjin leaned against Chan's shoulder, letting out a content sigh. "I think that's the most sentimental I've ever seen him get."
Chan chuckled softly. "He's not so bad."
"No," Hyunjin agreed, his voice warm. "He's not."
In the weeks that followed, life fell into an easy rhythm. Graduation was approaching, and talk of college and the future filled every conversation. Hyunjin had already been accepted to a prestigious art school, and while Chan hadn't applied anywhere, he knew his place was by Hyunjin's side.
One afternoon, as they walked through the park near their school, Hyunjin turned to Chan, his expression serious. "Have you thought about what you're going to do after graduation?"
"I have," Chan said, his voice steady. "I want to stay with you. Wherever you go, that's where I want to be."
Hyunjin smiled, his heart swelling. "Good answer."
"And I want to keep learning," Chan added. "About people. About the world. About what it means to live."
Hyunjin took his hand, squeezing it gently. "Then we'll do it together."
They walked in silence for a while, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the path. For the first time, the future didn't feel uncertain or overwhelming—it felt like an open door, waiting for them to step through.
That night, as they sat together under the stars for the last time before graduation, Hyunjin leaned against Chan, his voice soft. "You know, I used to think I needed to put on a show for people to like me. To be someone I wasn't. But with you... I've never had to pretend."
Chan rested his chin on Hyunjin's head, his arms wrapped securely around him. "You're perfect just as you are."
Hyunjin smiled, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "You're such a sap."
Chan chuckled, pressing a kiss to his temple. "Only for you."
As the stars twinkled above, they sat in comfortable silence, knowing that whatever challenges the future brought, they would face them together. Chan wasn't just a project anymore. He wasn't defined by his programming or his past. He was himself—fully, completely—and he had found a place where he belonged.
And with Hyunjin by his side, that was enough.
