When you were five years old, Hydra had started kidnapping people to experiment on once they realized they weren't going to get any more volunteers. (The Maximoff's were a strange occurrence.) One day your mother had left you in the car while she ran in to pick up something from a store, and they took you to a discreet base in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Since then they'd been experimenting on you, trying to get you to use 77% more of your brain power-the exact amount needed to develop a ability. Recently you'd discovered your power, and you used it to get away from Hydra. You could teleport.
Landing in the middle of the woods, you shiver, pulling your thin jacket closer to yourself. Clothes weren't a first priority to Hydra, and certainly not clothes to keep you warm.
You barely have time to think that it might be a good idea to run before alarms go off when-
BEEP BEEP BEEP!
The alarms were off. Great.
You run through the woods as fast as you can-which isn't that fast since all you've eaten since you were five has consisted of bread and plums. Occasionally you trip, teleport accidentally, and fall somewhere else.
About the seventh time this happens, you fall on top of a tall blonde man who jumps, startled. Scrambling back, your eyes widen with fear. Pushing yourself back, he steps forward towards you. "Calm down! It's okay! Who are you?" His voice is gentle, but you're still afraid. Anyone could be a Hydra agent in disguise.
"Uh-I-" you gulp, closing your eyes. "Y/n. W-who the h*ll are you?"
"Lan-" he catches himself. "I'm Steve Rogers."
You jump back further. "They-they talk about you. C-c-captain America!" You can't help but stutter, you haven't really talked to anyone since you were little.
"Who does?" He notices a tag on your jacket and goes to flip it, but you flinch, teleporting on accident to a nearby tree. "What was that?"
"I-I don't know!" You cry a little bit, gasping. "They are called Hydra. When I was little they took me and...did things. Brain things. I just escaped and I'm running."
"Hydra did this? Are you the only one?" he asks urgently.
"I think so. They mentioned I was only one to survive the treatment, that I was special. But..." You trail off, fingering your jacket. "I think they have others. Not here."
Steve sighs, then looks you up and down. "Alright, y/n, come with me and I can take you somewhere safe-"
Just as he says that a bullet flies by, and it hits the tree where you were. Luckily for you, you reappear behind Steve. "Run," he orders.
You follow him, but he's incredibly fast and you're nothing but skin and bones. Suddenly you grasp his hand tightly, whispering "Hold on," as you focus on somewhere far away. You don't know where to go, so you just think two miles and hope for the best as you're transported there. Once you land, you let go of his hand, panting.
"Traveling with two-it's harder. I've not done that before," he looks around again, then at you.
"Where are we?" Steve asks, worried.
"Two miles," hopefully. If it worked.
"If I gave you a location, do you think that you could get us there?" he seems to be done scouting, so he sits next to where you are.
"I don't know...I could try, but it is harder when I can't see it in my head. Where would he go?" You ask.
"Stark Towers. It's the Avengers base, and we can keep you there until we figure out what to do with you and your powers," he suggests, and you slowly back up.
"Keep me there? I don't want to be kept anywhere!" You exclaim loudly.
"Y/n, quiet down! They'll hear you!" He stood up, too, advancing slowly towards you.
"How do I know you won't test me, too? How do I know that you aren't one of them? Why were you in the woods anyway?" You wish you could trust him, but you hardly knew him.
"I was looking for a friend of mine, Bucky-"
"The winter solider is long dead! I've heard the talking. You lie!"
He flinches when you say that Bucky is dead, but continues his slow movements. "You have to trust me, alright? If I wanted to hurt you, I would have," he promises, but you don't relax.
"Who is to say that you're not about to hurt me right now?" A dart wizzes by, and you teleported out of the way. The dart lodges itself into Steve's arm, but he acts like its nothing, pulling it out. You recognize the pink solution and move quicker. Too many times have the Hydra paralyzed you with this while operating on you. You feel the pain, but you can't scream or move. It's horrible.
Running, you dart from tree to tree, teleporting now and then to get some advantage. Then you get the unfortunate luck to appear back where you began on accident to see Steve fighting valiantly. Battle seems to be hard wired into his DNA, and it all seems effortless to him.
That was distracting to you, and you don't notice the pinprick until it's too late, and you hear Steve shouting your name as you fall to the ground, unmoving.
You watch from the ground as Steve fights the rest of them. You can see their problems easily from here-they attack one by one, maybe two at a time. They need to attack all at once. Steve finishes off and runs over to where you are.
"Y/n! Are you alright?" Steve asks. You can't respond, obviously. You dart your eyes from Steve to the backpack again and again until he gets the message. "Of course! They'll have an antidote."
He digs through before pulling out the only vial in there-a single dose of a milky white medicine that reverses the affects of the paralyzer.
"Hold still," he cautions, and if you could smirk you would. It's not like you have any other choice besides holding still.
Slowly but surely he pushes it into your left arm. That's the first to get feeling back, and you wriggle your fingers, then your wrist.
You speak slowly. "Thank...you."
He nods. "Anytime."
"Are they all gone?" You ask cautiously.
"For now," he stands up again and starts to walk away.
"Where are you going?" You appear next to him.
"I'm not leaving, I promise," he laughs a little.
"Why can I trust you?" You wonder aloud.
"Because if I wanted to hurt you, bring you back to Hydra, why would I cure you of the paralyses?" he asks.
"Where are we going then?" You twirl a bit of your hair absentmindedly.
"It's a safe place were you can stay if you want. At least until we see all that Hydras done," Steve offers.
"Do you promise to stay with me?" You ask softly.
"I promise. Let's go y/n," he grabbed your hand gently.
"Where's then location?"
"Stark Towers, New York. Have you ever seen New York?"
"No," you reply. "I have been here since I was five."
"Well...imagine skyscrapers, and it seems like everyone in the world is there."
"Alright. Ready?"
"Ready."
