Hydra has slowly been falling apart. A majority of their human experiments failed, aside from the Maximoff twins. They never experimented on you, but held you captive as leverage against your father, who was the head of a scientific manufacturing company.
You had been sitting in your cell when you heard the screaming and shouting. Running to the bars, you shout, "What's going on?! Hello?"
No reply, just more shouting. Suddenly a reddish mist floats towards you and unlocks your cell door. Hesitantly, you step through. was this a test? To see if you'd misbehave? They had told you that if you tried to escape they'd kill your father. You doubted that, because they'd went through the trouble of kidnapping you so they wouldn't have to. But then again, they could still hurt him. It was better not to take the chance.
For what seems like ages you wait in the doorway of your cell, listening to the fight die out. Then silence.
You decide to risk it again, calling out, "Hello? Is-is someone there?"
A figure appears at the end of a hall, slowly moving towards you. Once they're closer, you can see it's a girl, dark brown hair with a red leather jacket. The same red mist is around her hands as she slowly walks towards you.
"Who are you?" The girl asks.
"I'm y/n y/l/n. They're holding me captive as leverage against my father. Who are you?" you feel the need to explain that so she doesn't think you're one of them. But then again, in your ragged dress and your matted hair, it was probably quite obvious.
The girl looks confused about something. "Wanda. Have they been experimenting on you?" Wanda asks nervously. She has a strange accent that you can't place.
"No. Not at all. They said there was an 87% kill rate of the experiments and if I died they'd lose their leverage," you explain. "Is this a test?"
"A test?"
"To see if I'll leave."
"No of course not. Why wouldn't you leave? We're here to save you," Wanda closes the distance between you, grabbing your hand and pulling you down the hallway.
You follow her, praying this is real. Once you get to the exit, you see a few others. "This is the only one," Wanda explains.
The red headed women wearing black leans towards you a little. "What is your name?"
"Y/n y/l/n. Who are you guys?" You're a little shocked at today's strange turn of events. Wanda is still looking at you strangely, as if something is missing.
"I'm Natasha, that's Steve, and Jarvis, Sam and Rhodey are guarding the perimeter," Natasha points to each of the people in turn.
"We're here to help," the man who was dressed like a walking forth of July parade says-that's Steve, right?
"Are you sure there was nobody else?" Natasha asks Wanda.
"I was sure. They keep people well hidden, though, I was hardly able to find y/n," still confused. What was she thinking about? How nice it would be to read minds right about now.
"Alright, we can catch up later. This place is rigged. It's gonna blow," someone with metallic like wings attached to the back of his machine comes in.
"Okay. Y/n, can you run?" Wanda asks.
"I think so," you haven't run in a while, but you were pretty sure you could.
Steve and Jarvis lead the group, with Natasha following from behind and Wanda running besides you. Something catches at your foot and you trip, your ankle breaking. You cry out in pain, causing Natasha to turn.
"Keep going!" Wanda orders. "I've got y/n."
The others ran ahead as Wanda helps you up. "I can't-my foot-" you wince in pain.
"Here lean on my shoulder-" you lean on her just as you hear an intense beeping noise.
"Do you hear that?" You ask at the same moment Wanda shouts,
"GET DOWN!"
You drop down to your knees as Wanda throws her hands up, a red bubble of protection surrounding you and her.
You cough as the rubble clears away, the dust choking you. "Are you okay?" Wanda asks and you nod.
"Thank you. Are you alright?" You reply.
"I'm fine," Wanda stands up, looking around the wreckage.
"I'm guessing the winged guy was right. This place was rigged to blow," and they were prepared to leave you in there. Not as important as you thought.
"Yeah, I guess he was," Wanda sighs. "Lean on me, we can go and catch up with the rest of them."
You lean on her shoulder as you limp out of the rubble. Wanda moves some of it with her red magic. "You're lucky to have magic," you note, looking at her hands. "Many would kill for that."
"Many have," Wanda looks at you curiously. "I can move things with my mind, but I can also read people's thoughts and make them see whatever I wish," that sent a shiver up your spine.
"Really?" Your voice is a little bit higher than normal. She could be listening to your thoughts right now.
"In most cases, yes," she shrugs. "But with you, I see nothing. No thoughts, no fears, nothing. I cannot even get you to see different realities."
You let out a breath you didn't realize you'd been holding. "My mind is my own," you say.
"That is what it would seem," Wanda shrugs. "That is why I asked if they experimented on you. By now most would have yielded to my power," Wanda moves some more rubble to keep walking.
"Why can't you read my mind?" You worry that maybe they have experimented on you, put something in your food or something.
"I don't know. Can I trust you?" Wanda asks.
"I'm not sure...the old me you could trust. I would've laid down my life for others. But now, after everything..." You pause, not sure where your speech is going. "I just don't know anymore."
Wanda seems to understand. "When I was little I was innocent. Full of life. Even after I lost my parents, I always had Pietro. My brother. We always had each other," her eyes are wet, or maybe it's just the lighting. "But after I lost him...I wasn't sure who I was either. Like a part of me died with him."
You resist the urge to cry. You'd always been really empathetic to others problems.
"I'm sorry for your loss," is all you manage to say.
"I am too," Wanda agrees. You see a flying aircraft above the wreckage. They land it slowly next to you.
"Glad to see that you both made it," Steve says from the door.
"y/n here is very curious," Wanda helps you through the doorway and sits you down.
"I'll get medical wrap," Sam offers.
"Thank you," you smile.
"So,  y/n, why did hydra hold you captive?" Steve asks casually as Wanda leans against the wall next to you. You explain the story of your dads job and how they wanted to keep you as leverage to get him to behave.
"How long were you there as their hostage?" Natasha asks curiously.
"About two or so years. I lost track eventually," you look out the window.
"What I do no understand," Wanda starts, "Is why I cannot read your mind."
Steve sighs a little bit. "Is that really a bad thing?" Natasha says. "Some people would like their thoughts to themselves."
"It's not that I need to read every mind I come across, but the reason as to why I cannot is suspicious enough," Wanda reminds them. "Perhaps y/n was experimented on, without her knowledge."
You shudder. "I hope not. Perhaps my mind is just my own. Nothing weird about it," you suggest hopefully.
"Perhaps..." Wanda sighs.
"If you don't mind, y/n, could I ask you some questions? You might know something about hydra that could help us," Natasha asks.
"Okay...but I don't know much," you say.
"Sometimes people know more than they believe," Wanda smiles a little bit.
