The morning sunlight filtered softly through the curtains of Billie's Los Angeles home. Billie was already up, padding quietly around the kitchen in her usual oversized hoodie and socks, making a cup of tea. In the living room, her 14-year-old daughter Amelia was perched cross-legged on the carpet, her pacifier in her mouth and her well-loved stuffed elephant, Mr. Snuffles, clutched tightly in her arms. Today was a big day—they were going to visit Maggie and Patrick, Billie's parents, for a family gathering. Amelia adored her grandparents, but visits like these came with challenges. Billie knew how important it was to prepare Amelia for the day ahead.

"Good morning, lovebug," Billie said softly as she walked into the living room, careful not to disrupt Amelia's quiet focus. Amelia looked up at her mom with wide, expressive blue eyes. She made a soft humming sound, one of her favorite vocal stims, and began to rock gently in place, her hands flipping rhythmically in the air. Billie smiled. Amelia was calm and happy, and that was all that mattered.

"Guess what, kiddo?" Billie crouched to Amelia's level, brushing a strand of hair behind her daughter's ear. "We're going to see Grandma and Grandpa today. And Uncle Finneas and Claudia, too!" Amelia's face lit up, and she let out a high-pitched squeal of excitement, flapping her hands quickly.

"I know! It's exciting," Billie said, grinning. "But first, we have to get ready, okay? Let's pick out some clothes." She held out her hand, and Amelia stood up, still clutching Mr. Snuffles as they headed toward her bedroom.

Amelia loved soft and familiar textures, so Billie made sure to give her a choice between her coziest outfits. "Okay, let's see what we've got," Billie said, holding up two options. "We have the blue sweater with stars or the lavender one with clouds. What do you think?"

Amelia reached out and gently touched the lavender sweater, pressing it to her cheek. That was her way of saying yes. "Lavender it is," Billie said with a nod. "Good choice."

As they got dressed, Billie talked to Amelia about the plan for the day. "So, first we're going to drive to Grandma and Grandpa's house. When we get there, we'll say hi to everyone, and then we might play some games or just hang out. If it gets too loud or if you need a break, we can go to the quiet room, okay?"

Amelia didn't respond with words, but she let out a soft hum and nodded slightly. Billie took that as a good sign. She made sure to pack everything Amelia might need: her favorite snacks (Goldfish crackers and apple slices), a juice box, noise-canceling headphones, a couple of sensory toys, and of course, an extra outfit just in case.

Once Amelia was dressed and ready, she settled back onto the living room carpet with Mr. Snuffles while Billie finished packing. Amelia was humming again, rocking gently as she played with a squishy sensory ball. Billie glanced over at her daughter, feeling a wave of love and gratitude. Despite the challenges that came with navigating the world as a neurodivergent teenager, Amelia was bright, joyful, and uniquely herself.

It wasn't long before they were out the door and on the road. Billie helped Amelia into the car, securing her seatbelt and tucking Mr. Snuffles into her lap. She handed Amelia her pacifier, which Amelia immediately popped into her mouth. It was her go-to comfort item, and Billie always made sure to have it close by.

As they drove, Billie played soft, soothing music through the car speakers. Amelia rocked gently in her seat, occasionally making little cooing noises as she squeezed Mr. Snuffles and tapped her fingers on the window. Billie glanced at her in the rearview mirror, smiling at the sight of her daughter's contentment.
