Chapter 6: Story Time

I take a deep breath and let it all out.

"The whole reason why my mom and I moved here was because of an accident that happened back in Oregon."  I pause to look up at Alec's face.  His eyes looked deep into mine and I felt safe and secure for once in a very long time.

"It was late and my mom was working a night shift.  My brother and I got hungry so we went to get take out.  We were driving back and we didn't notice the truck swerving into our lane."  I feel a tear roll down my face.  I try to rub it off but Alec beats me to it and wipes it off with his thumb.  His touch made me fell instantly better.

"A truck hit us head on.  It killed him instantly and put me in the hospital for a month or so.  The doctors say I was lucky to even be alive but my brother wasn't as lucky as me.  He didn't even get the chance to survive, he was just gone.  No questions asked, he just vanished."  I feel all the emotions I've been trying to hide rushing out.  I pause to take a breath and keep going.

"It turns out that the truck driver was intoxicated.  He made that one stupid decision and it ended a whole entire life.  That's why I don't drink.  After everything that happened my father decided to take the blame out on my mom and me."  Now my tears were uncontrollable and felt like my eyes were going to burst at any moment.

"Why?"  Is all he can say.

"Because my mom wasn't there to protect us and I didn't do anything to help save my brother Lucas.  My dad decided to leave us and never speak to us again.  Just like Lucas my dad up and vanished.  My mom couldn't take the loneliness in the house so she moved us here to Florida."  I bend over covering my head with my hands trying to cover my agony.

"You know that's not your fault.  You couldn't do anything." He grabs me and I melt into his body sobbing and sniffling.  He felt warm and comforting.  We stay like this for I don't know how long but after awhile I finally stop crying and look up at him.  He has sorrow in his eyes and pain in his face.

"Whats wrong?"  I ask.

"Nothing.  I'm okay." He replies.  I can tell he's not being truthful but I let it go knowing we've already shared enough for tonight.

"Well I should go.  It's pretty late and I have work tomorrow."  I nod realizing it's already 1:30 in the morning.

"Are you sure you're going to be okay?"  He asks.  A part of me wants him to stay but I know that'll be very unlikely.  I hesitate but I give him another nod.

"Alright.  See ya later Blondie!" He says trying to lighten up the mood.  He gives me a little smile and a wink as he walks out the door.  I wave good bye and watch him walk past his motorcycle and down the street.

"Are you not taking your motorcycle!?"  I shout at him.  He looks back at me and smiles.

"It's a beautiful night Blondie!  I don't want to die just yet!"  He shouts back.  I walk back into my house and realize he's not taking his motorcycle because of the beautiful night but because of the beer he was drinking and of the story I just told him.
