Chapter 10: Dr. Brown

Chapter 10: Dr. Brown 

"Hey mom!"  I yell as I step into the sliding doors of the near by hospital.  

"Hey honey.  Why are you here?"  She says staring at me with an odd expression probably wondering why it's 4 in the afternoon and I'm here and not at home. 

"Umm I have no friends."  That's a lie I have Amber but she's on a family trip and Dakota is starting a night shift at the cafe.  

"I know, but you never come to visit me."  Did she just say 'I know'?  

"Well I never get to see you anymore.  You're always gone."  I reply.  Is this how normal family's are?  The kids try so hard to spend time with there lovely parents but all the parent wants to do is be alone. 

"I know Avery.  I just need to be alone sometimes." Well I guess so, or maybe it's just my family. 

"Wait mom, you work with different kinds of people all the time!"  I say now walking into her office observing all of the clutter and mayhem.  

"Well they don't know about your brother and father."  I step back remembering the accident.  I guess I was to distracted by Dakota and forgot all about it.

"Yeah I know.  So how has your day been?"  I ask trying to forget the horrible memory. 

"Fine I guess.  I received a new patient today.  I would tell you more but that's against the hospital policies."  I shrug hoping the patient will be okay.  My mom is an oncologist (oncologist treats cancer patients.)  I always hate to meet her patients because there is always a chance that I will never see them again.

"Umm Ms. Brown my mom needs your help."  I know that voice!  I shoot my head around to see the person who is standing in my moms office. 

"Alec?"  I ask still stunned wondering if that boy is getting very good at stalking me or if he actually need my moms help.

"Avery?  Are you stalking me?"  What would make him think that?  He's the one who's asking my mom for help.

"No!  Are you stalking me?"  I reply now standing up from my seat and walking towards Alec.

"No!  I mean you're the one who's asking my moms doctor questions.  Are you really that uncertain about me!?"  He yells now getting very angry with me.  

"Your moms doctor is my MOM!"  I scream back at him. 

"Your mom?  Her last name is Brown!  Nice try Blondie."  He shouts back at me. 

"She took her maiden name you idiot!"  I howl back. 

"Avery!  Be nice."  My mom yells at me while smiling at Alec. 

"Oh.  Well you never told me your mom was a doctor."  He says annoyed at the fact that I won the argument. 

"Well you never asked."  I reply while rolling my eyes. 

"Umm Alec,  you said your mom needs my help?"  My mom asks trying to prevent the next argument.

"Oh yeah.  She had some problems..."  He stops and looks over at me.  I can tell by his pleading eyes that he doesn't want me to hear the rest.

"I'm gonna leave.  See you later mom."  I wave at her and glance up at Alec.  His eyes are glossed over and it seems to me that he hasn't had very much sleep.  As I walk down the hallway I glance back and see Alec breakdown.

"Hey wait up Blondie!"  I swerve my head back to see Alec running after me as I step into my car. 

"For the last time Alec, my name is Avery!  A-V-E-R-Y!"  I yell back. 

"Yeah I know.  So where are we going?"  He asks while getting into my car. 

"We?"  I ask while turning on the car. 

"Yep."  Is all he says.  I usually would've put up a fight but I know he's having a hard time with his mom so I shrug and back out of the parking lot.  

I glance over at Alec and for a split second his face was covered with sorrow but he quickly covered it up with a fake smile.  I wish there was something I could do to help him.
