Valerie had never been one for extravagant celebrations, but her bandmates had insisted on throwing her and Daniel a birthday party they’d never forget. Turning 18 was an important milestone, they argued, and The Velvet Reverie’s rising fame demanded a grand affair. The night had been meticulously planned: an exclusive soirée at an elegant London venue, attended by the crème de la crème of the music, fashion, and art worlds.
On September 17, 1981, the grand ballroom at Claridge’s was transformed into a surreal gothic dream, a reflection of Valerie and Daniel Moltisanti’s intertwined yet distinct personalities.
Black chandeliers dripping with crimson roses hung from the high ceilings, casting shadowy patterns onto the marble floors. Tables were adorned with velvet tablecloths in deep purple and black, accented by gold candelabras. Guests sipped champagne from crystal flutes and nibbled on hors d'oeuvres as an orchestra played a hauntingly beautiful rendition of Japan's "Ghosts."
It was a night to remember, attended by some of the most notable names in the industry. Boy George and members of Culture Club arrived dressed in their signature flamboyant styles, adding a pop of color to the gothic theme. Spandau Ballet exuded their usual charm, with Tony Hadley offering his warm congratulations to the twins. Other guests included Mick Karn, Siouxsie Sioux, and the members of Duran Duran, whose entrance caused a ripple of excitement through the crowd.
Valerie found herself swept up in a whirlwind of conversations, each one more surreal than the last.
“You’ve outdone yourself, darling,” Boy George declared, his glittering cape trailing behind him as he leaned in to kiss Valerie on both cheeks. “This is the most exquisite gothic fantasy I’ve ever attended. If you ever tire of music, you could make a killing as an event planner.”
Valerie laughed. “I think I’ll stick to music for now, but I’ll keep that in mind, I didn't do much though, it was more my mates idea.”
Nearby, Philip Oakey from The Human League raised a glass to her and Daniel. “Eighteen suits you both. I’d say the industry better watch out because it’s about to be owned by the Moltisanti twins.”
Daniel grinned, always the more outgoing of the two. “We’ll take that as a promise, Philip. And don’t think we’ve forgotten about that duet you owe us.”
“Oh, I’m ready when you are,” Philip replied with a wink.
Siouxsie Sioux, a vision in a black corset dress and dramatic eye makeup, approached Valerie as she admired the centerpiece of roses and candelabras.
“Happy birthday, Valerie,” Siouxsie said, her voice soft yet commanding. “You’ve captured something beautiful here. It’s like stepping into another world.”
Valerie smiled shyly. “That means a lot coming from you. You’ve been such an inspiration to me.”
Siouxsie’s crimson lips curved into a rare smile. “Keep creating the way you do. You have something unique, and the world needs more of that.”
