A few months later
"Iris! Oh my god, you have to look at this..."
I turn towards Roxy and smile as she shows me a picture from her sister's phone. Daisy, her sister, tries to grab it from her younger sibling's hand as Roxy teases her about the uptight doctor letting loose and passing out drunk in her best friend's apartment.
A light blush covers Daisy's cheek as she tries to take the phone back, and I have to stop myself from bursting out laughing as I spot Alex, who is sitting in front of us, smiling like an idiot at Daisy's reaction. His eyes roam over her torso, shamelessly checking her out as she stretches from her seat to try and take her phone back from Roxy, who can't stop laughing.
I kick Alex under the table as subtly as I can, and he jerks back, frowning at me and pulling his eyes away from the poor innocent girl. I gesture to my mouth to indicate that he has drool coming out of his, and he rolls his eyes at my mockery, his face flushing with embarrassment. This time I do laugh, which makes Reece, who is sitting across from me, turn to me and smile slightly.
He clears his throat before Alex can catch him staring at me, turning to his other side to continue the conversation he's having with my Dad.
I place my elbow on the table and put my chin in my hand, observing the both of them having a serious discussion on finances in the NBA, a consideration Reece now had to make given he had strong interest from two teams to draft him. Occasionally, Alex would join in the conversation from Reece's other side when he wasn't getting distracted by Daisy, Roxy's sweet older sister who had just obtained her board certificate and was now a practicing Doctor in UW Medical in Washington, incidentally also the city Alex was in.
I don't think either of them knew that they were living in the same city, though, and I wouldn't be telling them. Where's the fun in that?
I look to my right and smile as I watch Roxy roll her eyes at John as he blows kisses at her, stopping when Roxy's Dad would turn from his conversation with John's parents and acting serious again when it would happen. The constant switching act made Daisy and Roxy laugh.
John and Roxy had (to our relief) given into their inevitable attraction and John had declared them a serious couple a few months back. Roxy always complained about how she had no say in it, but I knew she loved it and loved to give him shit about everything just as much.
And as for Reece and I?
Well, we were still mad about each other.
A few weeks after the publicity fiasco, things had died down, but it had taken more than a month for people to stop talking about our relationship, mainly because someone had pieced together the connection between his Dad's case and my Dad's role in it, which to our chagrin had become big news.
Roxy had insisted after that stopped that Reece and I had become a legendary couple as per the conversations she'd heard and had ("The criminal's talented son and the famous lawyer's smart daughter, people are eating that up, man," she'd declared) but I still rolled my eyes sceptically when she brought it up. I didn't care anymore about it – I would've preferred we stayed out of the spotlight of course, but if it meant I could be with Reece and love him unconditionally and openly, then I'd be okay sacrificing anything, really.
Surprisingly, once I'd nervously explained everything to Dad and Alex and Dad had met Reece (Alex refusing to civilly meet and talk to Reece until much later), they had taken to each other – Dad had basically started mentoring Reece and taken him under his wing, and I knew that had meant a lot to Reece.
Alex had taken more time to come around, but once he'd gotten over the initial resistance, they'd gotten along quite well. It was still hard for him to overcome his older brother tendencies however, especially after their tense interaction outside the restaurant so many months ago – hence Reece and I sitting a few seats away and across from each other, as Alex had mandated with his hawk-like attention.
