Davis's pov:

"I told you to delete those ugly snaps of mine you took, but you sent it to people and now our school mutuals have been asking me what's up with us!" I exclaimed.

"So what?" She replied with nonchalance, "Tell them we're just hanging out as best friends as we've reunited, what else!?"

"Yeah, of course, what else." I whispered under my breath.
"Did you say something?" She asked outright and I shook my head.

...

Earlier that morning, after our day out which seemed more like a date, I had a dream.

"If you don't like dark chocolate, I'll get something else." I was in the exact same scene. "No, no, I love it, give it to me, it's mine now!"  She put her hand forward to grab the chocolate and our hands brushed for a moment. Even though it was a dream I felt every intense feeling, my heart raced, my breath hitched.

She let her fingers brush onto my hand for a while. Everything was happening in slow motion. There was this tension between us and as her fingers grabbed the chocolate and slightly pulled it, I had a good grip on it too and by chance I got pulled closer to Anna. Her wide eyes  gazed into mine in amusement and they dropped to my lips and she inched closer... and just when it felt too real I jolted awake.

I mentally slapped myself for thinking about that dream right now, with Anna in front of me. Of course it was just a dream. It meant nothing. But why did I feel so deeply about it?

Maybe I was moving too fast. I had just broken up recently. And now I was having this dream about Anna? My best friend. Of course we were just supposed to be best friends.

...

Addy joined in as she saw us both sitting in the cafeteria. "Hey, Anna what's up? And you... Dav... Dave?"

"It's Davis. My close friends call me Dave." I specified.
"Yeah, okay. Like Anna...?"

"Yes, like Anna." I figured she was teasing.
"Hey. A lot of people call him Dave. That's like shorter and sweeter version of Davis. Convenient." Anna replied.

"Well... Yeah!" I mumbled. So, she doesn't really call me that because of affection but because it's convenient. And a lot of people call me that, that's basically my nickname everyone uses, nothing special.

...

Despite the chaos in my mind. I didn't let it all take the better of me and as usual, mine and Anna's banter in late night texts and sharing memes or stories went on.

"Who do you keep texting and smiling?!" Ryan asked. "It's his, best friend. Marshall."

My friends wouldn't leave me alone hounding me about the same thing every time, as I repeated the same response every time that we're just friends and every time, they laughed it out without believing me. They were not suspicious about us, they were delusional and sure about the fact that Anna and I were something more.

...

Third person pov:-

Anna headed to the library the next day. She was scanning a shelf for some reference books for some topics when her eyes landed on a familiar figure at a corner table. It was Davis which was quite amusing as he was not the kind of guy to spend his time in the library alone, when she moved a bit away from the shelf she saw that he was sitting with Sasha, one of his friends from their group.

Anna spotted them huddled over a laptop, seemingly deep in discussion. She hesitated, thinking she might say hi if it were just Davis, but seeing them engrossed in their work made her pause. Deciding not to intrude, she went about collecting the books she needed.

As she browsed the shelves, she felt a gaze on her. Turning, she saw Davis waving. She smiled faintly and returned to her table, intent on sitting alone, but Davis gestured for her to join them. Reluctantly, she walked over and took a seat next to him.

"We've got a project," Davis explained casually. "We could pick our partners, and Sasha picked me."

His words stirred a small annoyance in Anna that she couldn't quite place. She simply nodded, trying to mask her irritation.

As she flipped open a book, Davis leaned over. "Heading to the cafe later?" he asked, clearly planning to tag along.

Before Anna could answer, Sasha chimed in, her tone brisk. "Dude, we have to finish this project by the weekend."

Davis shrugged, seemingly unfazed, but Anna's mood soured further. She tried to focus on her notes while Sasha drew Davis's attention back to their project. The easy camaraderie between them only added to Anna's discomfort.

After a few minutes, gathering her things, she stood up, ready to leave. Davis immediately noticed. "Leaving already?" he asked, his brow furrowing slightly.

"Yeahhh I-" Anna replied, stretching the word with an air of nonchalance. "I'm hungry."

It was a lie, of course. She wasn't hungry-just uncomfortable and bored. Without waiting for a response, she gave a quick smile and headed towards the door.
