"Come on Em, we'll be late!" I called from the bottom of the stairs. "Chill, I'm coming, " she replied, rushing down the staircase with her hairbrush in hand. "Honestly, we're going to uni, not a fashion parade!" I exclaimed, gasping at her attire. She was dressed in a sky blue tank top with a smooth finish teamed with black embroidered leather trousers. She wore a casual but stylish blazer on top with 3 inch heels. She looked amazing, but stilettos for uni? I'd think not.
"Don't grumble, we need to make an impression, love. And you can say goodbye to that T-shirt. The first thing I do once I get there is shred that T-shirt and have a bonfire party. " She winked, causing me to narrow my eyes at my bestfriend. We'd been bestfriends for 5 years now but her fashion statements had not touched me. Okay, I had given in to wearing heels and dresses on special occasions ONLY, but that was it.
I glanced at my reflection in the full length mirror at one corner of the hall. I was clad in my favourite skinny jeans and "I'm 99.9996599 % Perfect!" T-shirt with my favourite pair of converse. My long black hair fell in waves along my back. I was too lazy to hair dry it in the morning , so I left it to take its own sweet time to dry up. Honestly , I didn't look terrible.
"Now who's delaying who?" , said Emma, a smirk spreading on her face. "Shut up and let's move." She laughed, moving towards the kitchen. Mrs Mason, Emma's mom, was just serving breakfast to Mr. Mason. Mrs Mason was one of the sweetest ladies I had ever come across. And she made super pancakes. Most of all, she didn't make me feel motherless.
" Good morning, Mr and Mrs Mason, " I said, smiling. The lovely aroma of hot pancakes and maple syrup travelled to my nose. I had to try hard to not leap up and grab all of them off the counter.
" So, when will you be leaving?" she inquired. "As soon as madam finishes her fashion parade, " I muttered as Emma dabbed on some lip gloss. Mrs Mason laughed, handing me a plate. "Here, this should keep you occupied, " she said, grinning. She knew I worshipped her pancakes and so I did not waste a minute before plonking myself on the nearest available chair, which turned out to be opposite Mr. Mason.
"Has Daniel arrived?", asked Mr Mason to no one in particular. "Nope, the girls will be picking him up and heading straight to university", said Mrs Mason, not looking up from her cooking. Daniel Finn. That word was enough to make me chock. When Mr Mason looked down at his newspaper, I shot Emma my death glare. She did not look at me but kept slipping sideway glances at me, hoping I'd break my staring session. I, on the other hand, did not intend to do so.
" Any more pancakes, sweetheart?" asked Mrs Mason, as she handed her husband his breakfast. I broke my glare and put on a smile ( correction: fake smile) and said " No thanks, Mrs Mason. I don't want to get sick in the car. " I suffered from acute motion sickness. Even a few blocks in a closed car and the world seemed to have ended.
"We're ready!", chirped Emma, pushing her plate away and getting up. "Let's go!" I joined in. I was also excited about uni until I realised where we were headed to. I had engaged in such an animated conversation with Mr Mason about science fiction that I completely forgot about our next stop. And the fact that Emma and I needed to talk. Serious talk.
We did our last minute packing and started to leave. I was waiting at the door for Emma. She was having a last minute talk with her parents, mostly with Mrs Mason. When she reappeared, I could see the dampness in their eyes. Mrs Mason then wrapped her arms me. "All the best dear," she whispered in my ears. "And please keep her on a leash," she added, with a pleading look. Emma rolled her eyes and I let out a small laugh. Mr Mason had loaded the luggage into Emma's car and we were all set to leave. We got in, Emma at the wheel, I on the passenger seat next to her. We waved our final goodbyes and pulled away.
As soon as we pulled away, I turned towards her and said flatly, "Now why the heck is Daniel coming with us?" I asked, trying to control my anger. "Oh thaaat....see...what happened was...., " she began. "Cut the crap, come straight to the point, " I curtly replied. Sighing, she began with the real tale:
"See, you know how Mom and Mrs Finn are best buddies?"
"Yeah, so?"
"Daniel is going to same uni as us. "
What. The. Heck.
"So?"
"Will you stop so-ing?", she said frowning
"Will you continue with the tale?", I shot back.
"Okay okay. Mom suggested we go together. You, Danny and I. I tried to negotiate, but she went into the crap of how unsafe it could be for 2 alone girls to drive for 3 days on the road. She rung up Mrs Finn and made plans. Mrs Finn was delighted, Mom was delighted, therefore decision made. "
"Two things: Do NOT call him Danny. Even if he is like a cousin to you. It is an insult to my cute 2-year old cousin Danny. And two: You are dumb. "
"You love me anyway," she blew a kiss at me. I stuck my tongue out at her and looked out of the window.
"I'd rather call him Daniel the Douche," I muttered. She laughed and said, " Your choice of names is hilarious. "
So basically, I was stuck in a nauseating 3-day car drive with my psyched best friend and the guy who, when I was a kid, made me feel motherless the most. How cool is that?A/N- Hi readers!
